Anyone know if there is an age check on tyres as part of the RTA annual inspection? Also how strict are they on tread depth all the way across the tyre, mine have loads of tread left but the edges have suffered a little from one or two track days?

In theory yes, they read the date code stamped onto the side of the tires.

I THINK but really not sure its 4 years.

As always with out here its if they check / how they feel on the day.

I had 2008 tyres on my old Aston... Suffice to say it passed last month. Car had only done 20,000lms in total. It's supposed to be 3 or 4 years.. However if you can looks clean and tyres look good, good tread, walls and ggeneral condition you should be OK. However, that said, if the testing chap didn't get any the night before then you might get a fail! I would take the chance .
