Hi All,

I'm a long time follower of PH, but never signed up.
I noticed the Middle East forum a few weeks ago (after I went to the 24hr race)(my pictures are nowhere as good as others that I saw on here)
Just a little about myself;
From UK, 29. love anything to do with motors. I moved to Dubai on 4th Jan on a one way ticket, I'm looking for work as a Quantity Surveyor, if anyone knows of anything going...?
It would be good to get to know you all at any upcoming events.
I need to buy a car soon, thought about the car auctions?
Hiring a jeep wrangler at the moment, never thought I would like it as much as I do!

Anton, Welcome to Dubai.

Some thoughts:
- Don't ever buy at auction here. Like ever.
- Buy on Dubizzle and buy on service history, ideally Privately so you can look the owner in the eye and ask about the car
- Don't think that just because you are buying from a dealer that you will get a decent car. They are just as shady as some car dealer from the East end of London. (When it comes to buying second hand)
- Whatever car you buy get it checked. Let us know what you are considering and the lads can recommend a place to take it. If its a 4x4 then AAA Service Centre or Saluki Motorsports are both well known and trusted.
- Cars are cheaper here as I am sure you already realise so happy shopping mate.

I don't know of anyone with a position free in what you are doing. However if you are looking to buy a car or finance a car you will first need to rent a place. And you will need a job if you are finacing a car, usually been there at least 3 months if I am not mistaken, or something like that.

I would recommend getting a 4x4 if you are new to Dubai. Lots to explore, camping, beach, etc. Jeeps are easy to sell, Toyota's (Parado, Land Cruiser etc) hold their money well as do Nissans (Patrol). All are awesome in the desert. Jeeps seem to be the choice for younger chaps and there are loads of modified ones here that look pretty pimp. Also there are a few nice LR Defenders which are cool and as long as you dont mind a bit of boneshaking.

Cheers

Luke

For work there are lot of construction companies both good and bad. QS in the uk probably end up as a contracts manager here

Most jobs are word of mouth but try linked in and gulf talent

Also the people I work with, AECOM, T&T, Atkins, EC Harris, CBRE, JLS, Confluence always seem to be hiring at some level.

Welcome.

Qatar seems to be the place where most of the hiring is going on at the minute. Dubai is picking up. Jason has mentioned some of the bigger companies looking.

Good luck with your search and if I hear of anything going, I will PM you.

Greetings.

shirt was thinking of selling his lightly modified Jeep if you were looking to buy, unless he has changed his mind / already sold it.

March 7th is the next race day at the Dubai Autodrome so pop down and say hello. I will be garage 1A running a CBR600 (look for the only team with sponsor boards). e21Jason and shirt may be there helping Jonathan race his DC5.

yorky500 only comes down when there is a famous person he stand behind and be on tv.

you will have to wait until you get a job and therefore residency status before you can buy a car.

echo comments re: the auctions, i have been to a few and it's either wrecks or imports. the latter are decent enough but you need to speak the lingo. there's decent enough bargains to be had elsewhere if you are patient for the right car.

my jeep is for sale, which reminds me i need to do the rear brakes this week, bugger...
