I'm guessing the answer is "buyer beware/ Insha'Allah", but anyone know if there is any sort of insurance register here where you can check a car against being a write off or if it's had major insurance funded repairs?

That's a very god question mate. I am not aware of one.

I tend to just do the usual checks at the dealers, check service history and have a good look at the paintwork. I think if you take it to a decent shop they can see the work. You could count on one hand the places which could paint a car properly in this town. Most do pretty shonky paintwork so it doesnt take much to know the car has been done.

Still, its a good point and would be good to know if there is such a service here. Post if you find out please.
Cheers

I'll ask the very helpful lady at the Axa service desk in DIC when I get back to Dubai, she may know. Not in quite such a rush now given that the dealer I was going to P/x with seems to have no understanding of how to work a trade in deal! Apparently offering way below the market for my car and not discounting cost of the one he is selling (even after showing me the less than glowing inspection report) is a good deal! Back to dubizzle....
