Hi All,

I have given the company car to my wife and decided its time to spend some money on something else for myslef in addition to the Wrangler.

The car I am specifically interested in was purched in the US and shipped back to the UAE by the present owner, he cant find any of the history. It has not been used much since they brought it to the UAE 2 years ago and hence they are not selling. They appear to have a large collection of cars already.

Any issues or problems with US spec cars in the UAE ? As far as I can tell so long as you are buying with the non GCC factor already priced in I cant think of any major problems. Residuals will be lower of course.

Cheers
K
PS Can anyone recommend any good mercedes specialists in Dubai.

You've touched on one issue, lack of history.

I know of a couple of Mustangs that have seemed like a great deal, only to be professionally inspected and they have been badly bodged repairs of cars that have been written off in the US, bought cheaply, repaired and sent over here. Another had very obviously been parked in a lake and had the usual electric gremlins as a result.

Cooling systems can also be better on GCC spec cars apparently, unless that is an urban myth?

imvvho, tis bks.

cars are global spec, they get tested in the desert and tested in the artic circle. tested on german autobahns and tested over british potholes. the spec is the spec. let's not forget parts of the US get just as hot as here.

US imports do tend to suffer from a price perception, makes for some great bargains.

all of the above. Nothing wrong with US spec cars, or others for that matter.

As for a good Merc garage - for me Silber Arrows all the way. Located not far from Times Square. Great service, nice atmosphere, great coffee.

As everyone has said...and, can be trickier when it comes to selling time. Why? Because most 30-40 year old families cant be arsed with the hassle and just opt for GCC Spec. Also depends on the model, if you are talking Merc, BMW, Porsche, Jeep and the usual marques which are hugely popular over here then you have to be mindful that most will drop their pants even on GCC cars to sell them....because in this place people need to leave sharpish sometimes. As such, and with peoples preference for GCC, sometimes if you negotiate hard enough then you can get a GCC spec for the same as a USA spec.

All in all, if you want a bargain then there are some deals to be had, most certainly. Lack of history is an issue I believe. You can always get the VIN Number and then, if you know roughly what area it came from, call the main BMW dealer there and check the vin number. Sometimes you can get a welath of info. My mate almost bought a C63 (Of which loads are from the USA here) and he checked it out in the USA and it has 144,000kms registered....whereas it said on the ad here, 36,000kms. So, do people clock em...you bet your ass they do. Some have been flooded and then sent over, crashed etc.

My advice, buy a car based on its service history and condition. And then try to fleece the chap on price. Most are sometimes surprised how much some people will come down on price. I picked up a porker in the recession which was on for 240,000aed....for 185,000aed. Nuff said.

Which car you planning on anyways?

And by the way, that chap sounds like a dealer.

1- He has loads of cars
2- Random punters dont "Ship" cars off of their own back
3- Even if he did ship it, why the hell hasnt he got a bean of paperwork. If he bought it in the USA, who did he buy it from? Get that persons details and check. Or at least check where he bought it from..a dealer...a punter, which county. Then call the local dealer in the county with the chassis number.

Carfax is an amazing source of information. You can buy a US car more safely than cars in the UAE using this resource.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the information I have purchased the car after lots of checking. Ran the carfax report with no issues. The family is wealthy and the dad brought the car for the daughter whilst studying at Harvard in the US. Although I trust no one the story seems to stack up from my research. First time I have brought a car with no service history, big worry.... they do appear honest and a few receipts I did find in the car showed they were not traders or into saving the pennies.
Car is now with in for its first service and check. Ill let you know how it goes....

oh yeah, the GCC cars have a emitting buzzer that comes on once you hit 125 kmh (and goes off below 120), but manufacturers deal with it differently...
