MotoGP Qatar 2014
Discussion
Hey Gaffer, all the MotoGP boys (or the vast majority) stay in the Grand Hyatt, but with the roadworks like they are it can be a bit of a hassle to get to Lusail from there.
I would say, given the current road works situation you would be best staying in the Hilton in West Bay (if you want to be in the city centre), it has quick access to the road that leads to Lusail and to the airport and is walking distance from the other nice bars in the 4 Seasons etc.
You should look to be paying no more than 800AED a night

Cheers dude. I thought most stayed at the Intercontinental..? wonder where they will stay this year if there are roadworks..?I would say, given the current road works situation you would be best staying in the Hilton in West Bay (if you want to be in the city centre), it has quick access to the road that leads to Lusail and is walking distance from the other nice bars in the 4 Seasons etc.

I would do the drive to Qatar but there is a slight issue of Saudi being in the way
Never been to Qatar so all info is useful. If I finally met VR - even randomly in a supermarket, I would be stupidly happy.

I can only say what I've seen, not sure about the Intercon, (the old one is a bit of a dump compared to the more modern offerings too) but the Yamaha boys were deffo staying in the Hyatt a couple of years ago as I was chatting to them and there were a few Suzuki guys walking about in the lobby too. From what I gathered the valet talking to them and the valet the Grand Hyatt was very popular with motogp teams.I would do the drive to Qatar but there is a slight issue of Saudi being in the way

If I were you I wouldnt go VIP at lusail unless you get in a hospitality box as the viewing balcony is at the end of the grid and you're well away from the action. You get a much better view from the Grandstand, I ended up sitting right on the start - finish line last year with just a regular ticket.
I don't know if you're married or not, but if you are you can do a road trip for sure so long as he goes with you and drives the saudi portion of the journey.
The Ritz Carlton is next to the Hyatt if you want to go stalking round the Hyatt its only a short walk away.
St Regis might pull in a few teams, its owned by the owner of the old Intercon and its seen as the fanciest hotel in the country.

FFS It is isn't it..? brain isn't working.
They must go somewhere to celebrate after the races is done..? I am thinking of arriving on the Friday and leaving on the Monday night.
...sorry, not that I'm aware of, maybe a private party but no venue I can think of. By the time the race is done and people are leaving its usually well after midnight and by the time you'd get back into town it would be 1am or later due to traffic. They must go somewhere to celebrate after the races is done..? Fri-Mon is fine but I dont think its worth going to the track on any day other than sunday, it is a bit of a drive and there wont be much happening...unless you rent a car for the few days then you can come and go as you please. Infact thinking about it, I'd rent a car for sure, it makes the most sense as you'd be paying 3-400AED in taxis anyway.
I shall also be going to the Moto GP with my wife and son and hadn't actually considered the possibility of driving there. Given that if I fly I'll be forking out for 3 flights and renting a car when I get there, driving does have a certain appeal. So my question is just how easy is it to drive to Doha from Dubai? I was of the opinion that crossing the Saudi border is a right hassle - am I right?

I did it last month, it is very easy if you're organised and if you take your time you can do it in maybe 8 hours or so from Dubai...I hussled and did Abu Dhabi Corniche to Doha Pearl in 5 hours 31min...it would have been 5 hours dead if it wasn't for traffic diversions and the associated traffic in Doha. You need to own the car you will be going in or have a letter from the bank if you have a finance outstanding on it.
Crossing the border was a breeze and the Saudi Border Police were actually lovely guys and very friendly, getting the transit visa for Saudi was straight forward too, I had to apply through a travel agent who processed it in less than a week.
