Who gives a toss?

It doesn't seem to be reported much outside the UAE and I couldn't name you the cities that held the last few.

Seems lots of people are concerned that inflation, especially rents, are going to go through the roof.

everybody in construction. a great deal of money will be thrown at completing infrastructure and pet projects, plus the main families rushing to build the most outlandsh and fabulous to brown nose the sheikhs. everyone i know in this field is expecting a return to the boom days with a healthy amount of salary uplifts for those moving jobs.

i hear from one source that the current ejari rules for rent increases may be abandoned. for sure there will be another bubble, a colleague's 2 bed ranches villa has increased in value over 500k since feb and even my property lawyer friends advise to buy-to-flip if you can afford to do so.

problem for the rest of us is how to make money out of this. currently thinking what asset-light company could rape the most money out of it before getting the hell out of dodge when it all goes bust again.

Interior design will be the one Phil.
Mince around-you are over qualified at this- looking at paint samples, steal design ideas from Google images, promise the world and charge a fortune.

Abu Dhabi has already scrapped its rent cap - 3 months after forcing anyone with a government-paid job to move to the capital.

Travel&Tourism sectors will get a big boost - gladly my company already services a number of the big names in the UAE, so hopefully we'll benefit from an uptick.

If you don't mind me asking - I posted in the Jobs section about this. I work in construction here in the UK and want to get out to Dubai, especially on the back of this. Would you be able to offer any advice/tips on how I should go about it? I'm quite young (read inexperienced compared to a lot of the competition) however, I have some experience coupled with willingness/drive etc. I also don't have any ties here so could move pretty much straight away.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Do you have a LinkedIn profile? If not, get one up and running and then post you are looking to move to the Middle East region. Use typical "construction" search words like "Project Manager / QS / Commercial" in your descriptions. That will get the Recruiters (who now use LinkedIn a lot) to notice your profile.

If you have any, and I mean any snippet of Rail experience, get that down as well.

So rail is really kicking off again now is it? I'm still tempted with a move back to Dubai...

I've done the top two already but will make some further tweaks as you've suggested.

Dubai/Abu Dhabi there is some: Stage 2 of Etihad rail is supposed to be starting construction soon (4 packages). Also, in Abu Dhabi - the Metro/LRT will soon be tendered.

Doha - if you have 1 head, a bit of rail experience, you can get a job.

Riyadh/Jeddah - screaming out for staff.

Lots of Roads/Infrastructure projects coming off in Abu Dhabi: Emirates Road (311) extension from Dubai to AUH. Mafraq - Gweifat highway plus others.

But as has been said above - the Dubai Expo will kick off a fairly large increase in construction activity.

construction is not my area so take this advice with that in mind. experience is not the be all and end all. attitude and a face that fits counts for a lot. a uk education and initial career experience also work in your favour. i hear the likes of damac are actively seeking foreign workers now as they used to recruit fairly exclusively from the GCC and as such have a junior staff with no relevant experience of the industry outside the UAE.

as others have said, linkedin is a good tool and it how i was contacted about my current job. also keep an eye on the major consultancies for direct applications.

Thanks. Would you happen to know any of the names of the companies that deal with the highways out there at all? - I don't seem to be getting the hit rate on LinkedIn that I was hoping for frown

Thanks for that - gives me some hope!!
Took a look at Damac though and the only vacancy that is remotely applicable requires 10 years of experience! Surely there has to be a way in for those with less like you say??

If I were to make a list of companies that i wouldn't work for in Dubai then Damac would be at the very top of it..

In terms of consultants:

AECOM, Parsons, Parsons Brinkerhoff, Auracon to name but a few

Contractor's: Al Jaber, Ghantoot, Zublin/Strabag, Samsung, various Chinese companies (CRCC, CECCC), Dutco Balfour Beatty, Indian company - I cannot remember the name.

I will think of more
