Mechanical Assistance Needed
Discussion
I've just replaced the Durango with a Cayenne Turbo which was bought in the knowledge that it needed some things doing to it.
It's at ARM at the moment and they've come up with a few more things that it needs!
I'm thinking that it's high time I learned to do simple things like disc and pad changes etc myself but I really don't want to go into it blind and I also don't have a location or indeed tools.....
I wonder if (in exchange for copious beer and bbq food of course) we could get a few mechanically inclined people together one Friday / Saturday in the new year to do some jobs on the motor....
I'd be properly grateful and a willing student!
And yes, the cost quotation from ARM is a part of the reason I'm thinking of DIY!

If it's driveable all you need do is get to JBR Murjan 1 car park. - aka clubby club - aka red squirrel racing. I have service trolley, jacks, seating, lighting, cooling, power, and muchos toolage. built in test track too!
brakes are dead easy, 1hr tops for the lot. so if you're keen get hold of all the filters, fluids, spark plugs etc.and we can do a full service. if the brake system needs bleeding bring some fluid for that as well as all i have is dot5 racing.

Thank Phil
Service has just been done, brake fluid just changed also.
What it needs is:
front brake discs and pads
front sub frame bushes
front diff bushes
wiring harness for the headlights neesd changing (6.5hrs labour in the book, so I'm thinking fairly complex!!)
drivers wing mirror needs stripping down and a new motor for the folding function needs installing (mirror moves OK, just doesn't fold)
rear seat climate control unit needs replacing as one of the switches has broken.
Think that's it, though I was advised that some of the busings will need pressing out? not sure if that's DIY or I'll need to go somewhere?

rich has a bushing press iirc. if not i have access to various hydraulic presses.
bushes and brakes no issue but electrics is not my department. i doubt a new loom is needed, old one has probably just been messed about with in the typical local fashion. jase removed several plates of spaghetti from my engine bay and got everything working properly so if you can get a wiring diagram he can see you right.

this is sounding more and more like a plan!bushes and brakes no issue but electrics is not my department. i doubt a new loom is needed, old one has probably just been messed about with in the typical local fashion. jase removed several plates of spaghetti from my engine bay and got everything working properly so if you can get a wiring diagram he can see you right.
I don't even think it's anything as complicated as plates of spaghetti to be honest, I think it's just a loose connection and maybe a bent pin or 2.
I will buy the factory workshop manual and that should have everything we need in it.
Am looking currently at sourcing parts here, if not then I'll either ship them from the US or I'll have to wait until I go back to the UK at Christmas and bring them in myself...

Out of interest, what do you think of the Cayenne Turbo? Quite fancy one as they must make a pretty good daily drive and there are plenty about to choose from. Bills are a bit scary though.
Just part ex-ed my 2008 one for a new GTS. Great car, very quick and comfortable. However, not cheap to run, had it serviced a couple of months back at 4,500 and 4 new Michelins at 7,000 before I decided i needed the new shape. Has pads and discs done last year, cost about 6k from memory.I've not had it long but so far it seems to be a cracking choice.
I'm sure they're not the cheapest of cars to own (though fuel economy is better than I'm used to) but then I didn't buy it to be cheap, I bought it because it's the ultimate sledgehammer to crack a nut and I've always fancied one.
Would have loved a GTS but they were well out of budget.

I'm just about to go a collect my Cayman from ARM. It's basically a full repair of all the little things that have slowly crept up on the car. I can't really complain as I've not had to do anything other than service it & consumables for the last 6 years.
It's still eye-watering though, having it all done in one lump.

You're not wrong..... my bill from ARM last week was 7,200aed, their quote for the works their inspection says the car needs was 24,000 aedIt's still eye-watering though, having it all done in one lump.
Where these inspections fall down though is that they're based on taking the car back to the condition it was when it left the showroom 8 years ago.... I rather doubt anyone will spend 3k AED on a new front bumper simply because there's a 2" scratch on the bottom of it.
Still, good to know that the garage is thorough I suppose!
I gave up on ARM a long time ago and used Terry and Phil at Hawk Motorsports instead who also specialise in Porsche when I couldn't do the jobs myself. I can't recommend them enough to be fair.
I am back in UK now but whilst in Dubai managed to build up impressive selection of tools, garage equipment, diagnostic gear etc.
The only tough part was working on the car in the high of summer, early starts where the key.

Haha, I wish I had only that to pay. Alex is about to to be 31k better off.
Lots done though, to many silly things as well. New cup holder tray, roof lining, etc...
31 THOUSAND? wtf? Lots done though, to many silly things as well. New cup holder tray, roof lining, etc...
I was upset when I got a bill of 800 dirhams for the Z3...!
Go on, what was the cost of the Masser..?
