Hi All,

I've just bought a base E36 M3 (more details to follow), which I intend to fettle into a fast road/track car.. I'm currently trying to work out which is the most cost effective way to get all of the parts I need over to Dubai. I'm going to need wheels, tyres, suspension, diff, brakes etc. all of which will be obviously be heavy. My current thoughts are to get it all sent to a relative in the UK and then get it shipped to Dubai. Is this what you lot do or am I missing a trick?

Thanks

Asterix

I haven't had big, heavy stuff shipped but make sure a dummy invoice is sent if the stuff is expensive. You'll pay duty on the price.

there's various ways and means.

you can ship directly in a group shipping container. try euromovers or pickfords for a quote. the price will be based on volume not weight, which is handy. however it is expensive. i paid about £600 for 70 cu ft. you'll also be liable for customs fees as you didn't bring this with you when you first moved out.

the expat race teams and garages often have containers going back and forth between here and the uk. a pher recently sent an engine home in one. enquire on evolve.ae and dubaipetrolheads.com. also pays to make friends at the track.

the last method is to be friendly with as people in aviation as you can. my exhaust manifold for instance came to dubai in one of HRH's transport aircraft. neil, the owner of dubaipetrolheads, is an emirates pilot and is helpful to those in the community. i believe we have a couple of PH pilots here as well.

much better to gather the items in once place and ship off your own back. that way you can just provide a commercial invoice to the carrier with values attributed at whatever level you like.

don't take the piss though. customs aren't that stupid and will make you regret it. also shipping goods at below market value means your marine insurance will not cover the full amount should the container fall off the ship smile

Hey,

I am in a similar boat as you know.

If you just need OE genuine equipment, I found a place in Sharjah that was able to source my replacement lights and some seals. I'm pretty sure they have filters, bushes and other parts available too.

Other than that, I have got one or two things off ebay (sorted by cheapest including postage to UAE), and its worked out ok price wise. Really depends from who and where.

Hi Matt,

Do you think they stock original wheels. Not sure about the aftermarket BBS ones I have. Luckily, everything seems to be working so far, except for one aftermarket HID light.

I'll try eBay, but my plans are to do quite a bit to it without making it indriveable for the road. If you're planning to import quite a bit maybe we could share the shipping cost?

I have a complete set of 5 OE E36 M3 rims with tyres sitting at home in storage. Not sure if I want to sell though (sorry about being a tease here).

I also have 2 leather vader seats in storage too.

As for other parts especially rims and suspension, I would get direct quotes from the supplier.

For smaller stuff like bushes and other bit, I use Aramex Shop&Ship. I buy from Turner Motorsports in USA

I would call Bob Collier and ask him if he has a shipment coming in from the UK (Or wherever else you are ordering from) and ask if there is room in the container for your parts. He always brings cars in for people and there is loads of room in the container. Tel: 0501010981
Just be sure to take the new parts out of the boxes....cover them in crap grease and then put USED PARTS on the box : ) Thats what I did. Then get a invoice made up and stamped...from one of the places which just says...used parts ...for like 100 bucks. In short, use one invoice with a generic "Used Parts" on it and send it with all the items. 100 or 200 USD or something like like that. You will pay 5% import duty...which 5% of the cost of the parts INCLUDING shipping....Plus you will have to drag your ass down to Karama post office to pick em up.
