Not necessarily the most PH related question but one far more practical.

I'm moving to Dubai next month and have to go furniture shopping when I get there as we are bringing nothing with us. I'm aware of Ikea however does anyone have experience of any other reasonably priced furniture stores where I can go to get beds, sofas etc. I'm not interested in spending top dollar on hand stitched curtains made from cotton spun by virgins I just want decent reasonably priced furniture.

Any suggestions?
Cheers

pan emirates is the biggest outside of ikea. reasonable prices but variable quality and taste. for a laugh head to the top floor where they keep all the stuff designed for local tastes.

the one store and marina homes do nice stuff but can be pricey. their sales are great though. then there's ethnic importers such as pride of kashmir and pinkies. here you can get antique and repro indian / oriental stuff - good quality and prices. british high street names such as zara home, next home, m&s, debenhams are all here. there's a place called crate & barrel in mall of the emirates who sell very nice stuff but you pay for the quality.

dubizzle is a good spot for buying white goods and furniture and there's always someone you know selling something. we bought our fridge, washing machine and sofa for peanuts this way.

There is also Home Centre and Homes R Us, or so I have been told by the wife on many occasions...... Couldn't tell you were they are located though.

We bought most of our stuff from The One and Marina. All good quality gear in my opinion. The trick is to wait for the sales which come around every three or four months and often offer 30-50% off.

We bought about AED30ks worth of new kit from Marina just before leaving Dubai for Australia and now that it's here I'm very impressed with it all. Even the movers commented that it was all 'good and solid stuff' compared to what they usually handle these days. The same stuff would cost me about $20,000 from the thieving aussie bd shops as the locals have bought a line that stuff has to be ridiculously expensive because everything has to come from far away. Tits.

Try out Pinkys.

They have a small branch near Mall of the Emirates and had a huge place in Sharjah, but the success of the Dubai shop has made them move everything over and shut the Sharjah place. It's where Marina gets a lot their stuff from but not at Marina's prices.

I have used Q Home a fair bit, and also Crate and Barrel. find them both at Mirdiff/MOE etc...

Actually, if it is furniture you need, make the most of the Indian firms in Sharjah. We have bought gorgeous pieces from them at, quite frankly, silly prices. Dining tables, cupboards, tables beds...all old rustic Indian wood, probably centuries old.
Let me know if you want to go when you get here...I'm due a trip.

Thanks, I'll take you up on that offer, being completely new to Dubai I'm sure to have loads to pick your brains about. Also, the more I save on furniture the more I can spend on a car, if it was down to me the mrs and kids would be sleeping on airbeds and eating rice and beans so I can buy something ridiculous and take advantage of the petrol prices!!
