We've all seen the show, right? Brewer running around pretending to be from somewhere near London, and slowly trading his way up the automobile ladder. Now, he had a bit of help from one dealer (who let him take a 60k land cruiser) and pay for it a week later, but the whole thing got me thinking AGAIN.

Do you think it is possible? Would you be interested in trying?

A few people, a starting pot, a bit of discussion, and up the ladder we go.
Unfortunately, I have almost no mechanical skills, however I can put into the pot, and I can spend hours a day helping the project progress, and I have 'people' at my disposal, when they are not busy!

Its more than possible, just need to find the right car at the right time.

Managers friend at work picked up a Prado for 90k off Dubiz the other day, brought it here to have a dent removed and our traders bought the car off them for 118k straight away, and that was trade. Not a bad turnaround for 3 days and no effort.

Usual scenario, right time right place. I used to do alot of it from the auctions in the U.K but naturally got burnt every now and then and just have to cut the losses from time to time.

The issues with Wheeler Dealers it assume labour consumables insurance and overheads are free.

Yes you can make money dealing but you need to know the market your selling into, and your liabilties ie you sell and it brakes what is the comeback.

Also i lot of the cars are poorly presented here and the sales staff are not the best 2 things you could easly address

Oh, I hear you. However, don't forget that labour is pretty cheap here. Also, quite a few guys here can do most things themselves. Christ, Phil has just built a car from scratch!
Knowing the market, agreed. But there also seems to be a steady stream of expats moving on, and therefore a simple cash sale would be lovely...I know I'd be happy to pay for that.

As you said re sales/presentations.....our success should be helped with good advertising and sales techniques...loads of pics, loads of paperwork....adverts in Engrish!

Couldnt be a truer word spoken! Advertising is everything with these things.

I started doing the Dubizzle advertising for our dealer around December, Dubizzle now roll it out to other dealers as a template for 'best practice' on how to advertise used cars. Should have really charged for the format thinking about it!

I'll have a chat over a beer- the norm though, never more than one- as soon as I get back- the Aussie classic car market is most interesting....

don't they drive on the left?

there is a market here for certain vehicles and room to make a quid or two. i guess the main obstacle is stock sourcing and having the capital available to make it happen.

same as the last time this was mooted, i'd be up for it.
