Yes it is available if you develop the right contacts or brew your own.

I know you can get it on some compounds but I have no experience of this. I definitely wouldn't risk smuggling it though.

On smuggling; ages ago on a Friday in Bahrain the pork section of our local supermarket was full of western mums buying stacks of bacon and getting labelled as veal. I asked one about it and she said they take it in turns to drive it over and make sure the kids are in the car to ensure a quicker border check.

Lots of booze but it is by invite only, so unless you have friend who lives on a compund your kind of on your own.

One alternative is go to the US embassy, head the gift shop see if they have an embassy party that weekend and buy a ticket.

If you are going to Dhahran, then head over the Causeway and hav an evening in Bahrain.

Yep they label the baon and pork sausages up as veal or beef sausages over there in the supermarket ( Spinneys ). I never had kids in he car and went shopping there a couple of times per week.
When I was there some 12 years ago, women couldn't drive in Saudi, so unless things have changed I don't quite understand that part.

More importantly get a multiple entry Saudi visa - or you won't be able to go to Bahrain at all ( well until you finally leave Saudi anyway ! ). Most important , costs a bit more.....but well worth it for R&R, partying for a weekend in Dubai/Bahrain.
Saudi embassy seem to reluctantly give out multiple visit visas, half our guys were on single entry visas, I was lucky and with I think it was 7 passport stamps for every trip over the Causeway to Bahrain and back, I got myself. Free trip back to the UK a couple of times ( tied in with a training session), to renew my passport and get a new multiple entry visa. I just told my company to sort it , but wouldn't get on the plane back there if i got a single entry visa !

Otherwise wherever you go, it's all about the contacts, so get friendly with the expats quickly and i'm sure you'll get a taste of 'Sid' soon enough !smile. The proper stuff is out there also and plenty of it , you just need to get invited to parties or compounds as already mentioned in an earlier post.

Good luck,
Nick

Last time I was there I was invited by a couple of local girls to a private club where I was lead to believe I could have a drink. Was tempted, figuring that the worst that would happen was that I'd be deported if it all went horribly wrong. Then I thought that I quite possibly would end up having bits chopped off on the way out of the country so politely declined..

sat at the st hole airport, where there isn't even a duty free and the club lounge is full and the airport is empty

my feedback on the booze issue is that no beer tastes like shreddies, the no wine isn't too bad and the no champange is st
