For the second time in as many weeks my wife has had this comment from the guy filling up the car at the petrol station.

At first I didn't have a clue what he was talking about but after getting some more info today it seems he was saying there was a build-up of air pressure in the fuel tank that was released when he opened the filled cap. Perfectly normal I thought. However, it seems he has a magical liquid that aleviates this major problem and will sell it to you for AED 30 only.

Strangely, they've never tried to sell me this liquid, only my wife.

Anyone else had this? I assumed it was nonsense and told her not to buy it.

No, she really needs it, it's a very real problem, if you don't use the additive in her car the tank could explode, the fuel tank pressure release valve is clogged up and the liquid is basically a declogger to make it work again....

or I could be talking as much bks as the guy in the petrol station is....which I am.

Guy tried to sell me 'injector cleaner' on Saturday.

'Do I look like a woman mate? Go and scam someone else'

'Sorry sirrrrrrrr'

My car is fecking useless at accepting fuel, takes the lads ages to get anything significant in, known issue with the S197 'Stang. Only place it works automatically is ADNOC.

i'm with toby, if you have a build up of pressure [above the small amount that occurs as part of the car's normal operation] then it sounds like the evap cannister needs cleaning [evap = emissions control gubbins, basically exhaust gas recirculation]. the liquid is probably some kind of fuel system cleaner and for 30chips sounds a lot less hassle than removing and cleaning the cannister.

in addition to the above, i would make sure you get them to check the evap on the next service. the system will throw up a fault code if there is anything wrong over and above a clogged filter.

I forgot to mention that the first time it was offered, she actually bought the additive. Seems it hasn't worked (or they're talking bu11st) because they've mentioned the same problem barely two weeks later. Might give it a couple of days and open the fuel filler cap myself to see what level of pressure is actually in there...

Still thoroughly skeptical though.

what a load of bks,

Fuel sloshing around in a tank will create a bit of pressure and will vent through the relief valve at a certain point but there will always be a little psfhttt when you open the filler cap- especially if the tank was low.

Remind me why a trust no-one from this area.

Ha! I know... I honestly can't remember. I've owned the car from new (4.5 years) and may have never opened it myself. Ridiculous.

I fill the motorbike myself so can at least console myself with that.

I once suffered the humiliation of having three petrol station workers trying to wrench the fuel cap open on a 550 Maranello. Perfectly vacuum sealed. In the end they found a strap wrench from the workshop and heaved with all their might, but not before putting a lovely deep gash in the (freshly painted) rear quarter panel.

Didn't blame them really, just one of those things.

Seems to be an Italian problem, though. I have to periodically vent the fuel cap on my 'grale so I don't suffer the indignity of breaking off the key in the lock trying to open it when the tank's empty.

FIRSTLY this is all Spin and BS.

You can get problems with over pressure or vacuum in the tank but it is quite rare these days.
It should throw a code if there is a real problem with it. It's part of the current OBD based emissions control that is mandatory in the USA. (In a lot of states in the US then now don't sniff exhaust just plug in a code reader and check for codes.)

I think that you will find that the "phooossh" noise is the air going into the tank!

As the fuel is sucked from the tank then a partial pressure results in the tank which should be relieved by the valve in the filler cap. But if the fuel is being used too quickly and the valve is not equalizing the pressure then there will be a "phooossh" when the cap is removed, which is quite normal!
