So I got back from Oman on Wednesday to be told my SWMBO the cooker light and extractor fan wasn't working. Check the bulb = blown, change bulb, still not working. Check the power connection = no power, check the fuse = fuse is working. OK so the neutral cable is actually yellow / green and not black or blue....

Turns out, the power feed to the cooker light /fan is routed via a light switch with 3 switches, 2 for lights and 1 for the cooker, which of course was off. Obvious really.....

Some of the places out here run three phase and they connect different circuits to difference phases to spread the load.
Hence they have do use some "funny" colors, not sure why they would do that in an apartment.

I'm sure it is just a case of normal Dubai wiring standards.

Over the years I've lived in four different places and all of them have had wacky wiring and a multitude of switches that I never could work out what they did. Also, the logic of which switch did what was often mildly amusing.

The apartments have built in heat detectors. Mind you it is best not to look at the fire control panel in the lobby as there are numerous orange flashing lights........

Let me add the guest room shower door opens inwards with the master bedroom one opening outwards......

That's kind of normal, last tuesday I condemed a the complete wiring to the sockets in a new office fitout 2 days before the client was due to move in, client went ape the contractor just did a shoulder shrug.

It will most likley be left as is and they will use as a reason not to pay the contractor, rather than get it installed properly.

Ian it sounds like they did not put enough cores in for 2 way light switching and have used the earth wire as the switch wire.
