Hi all,

Father in law is looking to buy a new car in Dubai as he's moving back (actually moving back to France) in 12 months, but would obviously prefer to buy a diesel as it's much cheaper in France.

There have been rumours about importers bringing in diesel models for a while, has anyone heard anything more?

He's looking at the Audi Q5 if that helps.

Thanks

I'm sure you can ask Nabooda to order a Euro-spec Q5. Used to be quite common in Dubai around 15 years ago to order UK-spec cars for export.

I'm sure they'll get him a price for whatever he wants - they even brought a handful of those bonkers Q7 V10 TDI things in as curios. He'd have to put 50% or maybe even 100% down on it for them to order it from the factory.

Main issues he might have is running it here before it goes back - RHD is a total no go and the only diesel for sale here is the stty developing world truck stuff which he might not want to put in it.

He wants a LHD car as he's moving to France, so that's not an issue.

Running it may be though, as you say. Though he only has to own it for 6 months to avoid import tax into France, so it could just sit in his garage.

the diesel here isn't that terrible, just higher sulphur content than europe. a mate runs a defender with no issue and we burn thousands of litres a week testing our engines and our diesel standard is pretty tight. i'd be more worried with debris in the fuel so as long as he changes filters regularly and gives the car a service once in france it should be fine.

would the audi warranty be valid in france? would an audi approved frog car be a better buy?

ps - use petrasco for shipping, speak to mike brodie and tell him the boys at SVDP racing made the recommendation.

Thanks, his company is part of Emirates group, so along with shipping already covered, he can get an Audi out there for around 30% less than the UK/France.

I did suggest that it might be more bother than its worth though, especially when he could pick something like this up in the UK and be sorted.

Just to clarify, they will be living half the year in their house in France, half the year in their place in Highgate, London. So when in London it'll be used very infrequently thanks to public transport and the fact that they've got a Mini stored there. It'll be used for driving to France and spending a few months there at a time, transporting dog, cat and all their crap with them. It's pretty rough roads around the wine country that their house is in, so that's why they want a 4x4.

what other marques can he buy at such discount?

whilst the big audi bus would make crossing france a comfy and easy experience, i would personally choose something i could make an easy profit on and take advantage of the far cheaper/better quality british used car market.

That's 30% off UK list so the lack of VAT should account for 20% of that. I think we get 10% off list from Naboodah because we're in their building.

I think it's Audi and VW only, not sure.

I considered the 'making a profit' angle, but without wishing to sound crude, he's not bothered about making money on something, he just wants a car. I am considering getting him to buy a Mustang out there as well though and shipping it back to sell here. Easy £10k for me in that one if I can convince him.
