Been flicking through the websites for both companies, be getting a flat shortly and im assuming both companies are available in all areas.

One thing I tend not to bother with is TV, ive turned the TV on in the hotel room once since I got here, a decent net connection is a major priority for me to keep in touch back home etc etc, also a landline would be a good idea.

My only thinking are any of the TV channels in the standard packages worth having? For when ppl stay over or if im totally bored one night! If not thinking might just go with a Net and Phone connection as will get a TV that can browse the tin ternet anyways.

Usually one or the other will be available.

I'm in Barsha and only just been able to upgrade to fibre-optics.

I have only the free TV (BBC News 24 is the only watchable channel), a telephone line (but don't actually have a telephone) and 16MBPS internet connection. I D/L all my TV and play through a 1TB HDD plugged into the Cinema system.

That's all you need. Apart from a VPN that bypasses all the UAE blocks and allows you to watch BBC/ITV etc. As long as the UK TV license detector vans don't come out this far....

I am with Oily here as well. I only have the Landline/Internet package as out of the TV channels they offer you MAY watch only 6/7 out of the 100's they offer - rubbish.

Im not sure what package i get, but its about 600aed a month for internet, home phone and a fair range of channels, most of which show st 24/7. That said, i do receive the discovery channel, so if you really are bored, you can watch the inbreds on 'Hillbilly Handfishin' or indeed the socially inept group that is 'Finding Bigfoot'.

O.k thanks for the replies, thats my mind made up on the TV to not bother. Idea is to get a net capable tv and can watch stuff on the net through that so a better net connection is a priority instead of wasting money on a tv connection I will never use!

Yeah the VPN has been suggested by several ppl, was a bit dismayed and not being able to watch the F1 repeats on I player or even check the lottery when I arrived in the country!!

A decent PC would be better than a net tv as the Hub tends to be preconfigured by Du so you have to run the VPN on the device rather than the hub.

See what your saying, brought a new laptop out with me for media purposes i.e movies as its 3D and music so will connect that to the tv, most the 3D tv's looking at have the net function on anyways so can still use it for other bits and bobs.

What will you be watching on the 'internet TV'?

BBC/ITV/4OD is reserved for those in the UK (or with VPN).

Probs wont watch a great deal on it will use the laptop through a vpn or may even get a cheap tower and hide it in with the tv cabinet if use it enough. Just most the 3D tv's looking at have the net capability on so may aswell get it!

Don't pay for anything other than the boggo basic TV package - all the channels are ste.

I have the 8Mbps Talk and Surf package through du - perfect for VPNing BBC and 4OD and perfectly adequate for downloading torrents and the like.

And although Etisalat and du are supposed to have come to an agreement about sharing fibres etc, you're more than likely to stuck with one or the other. Both are as bad as each other on price, service and crap customer service. Just pay your bills and hope you don't need to ever call the call centre and you'll be fine.

Agree with all of the above. I currently pay around 600 dibbers a month to Du (the only option in downtown) as the wife wanted all the TV channels and she never watches them. Doesn't help that the EPG is not up to scratch with most programme details missing so you don't know what the hell is on when.

This post has reminded me to go and cancel the extra TV channels (keeping AD sports for the premiership of course cool ) so cheers!

I really hope that you do not have to go into one of their customer service centres. If you do, take a tent, food and a good book as you will be there for days.

Whatever you do, don't ask them for a static IP! It would have been easier asking them to provide me with a portion of rocking horse st sprinkled with hens teeth! I know my Du account number off by heart I had to phone that many times!

I have most things noted down for when i move in a few days. I am going for the Etisat Triple play Premier pack for 399 AED.

I have fingers crossed that it all works from when its setup..

I have a dedicated media PC setup at my UK home that will record the ones i want, then it is setup to automatically ftp these to my home in AUH.
