Yes, I believe you can rent a car. In fact you can rent a car on a UK DL without a UAE residency visa.

However, the minute you get your UAE DL then you should switch over.

Again, conflicting stories.

No, if you have your USE residency visa the only license you can drive on is a UAE license. The process is pretty quick and painless (as far as Dubai goes) so long as you have the paperwork - NOC from your employer, eye test from an approved optician plus a good 4-6 passport photos. I think it's about 500-600AED to have everything sorted at one of the varous RTA License Offices around the city.

You can only rent a car here on a tourist visa (they will ask to see your passport).

Albeit a few years ago but....

I had a hire car when I arrived on a airport "tourist" visa, as soon as I got my residency the hire car stopped the hire until I got a UAE licence. But getting a UAE licence if you have a UK one is "easy".

you could have rented on your uk lcence without a residency visa. now you cannot as it is illegal to have residency and drive on a foreign ticket.

i lost my licence recently and managed to hire using the scan of my passport photo page and my uk licence. however i then went through a speed camera too quickly and am involved in a lot of red tape at the mo.

i tried to hire one on sunday for the day using my second uk passport [no residency] and uk licence, but they flicked through and couldn't find a tourist entry visa. when i produced my other passport i was refused service.

takes 30mins to get your uae licence if you take your PRO along.
