Bahrain causeway insurance
Discussion
Driving back to Bahrain from Riyadh Tuesday night on the Dammam Highway, I met (quite dramatically) a large concrete obstruction which someone had thoughtfully dropped into the outside lane. The outcome was a missing exhaust, a gearbox bleeding to death in the sand, and a worryingly strong smell of petrol, but hey...we were all still alive.
Bahrain insurance is not valid in KSA, but fear not, we had bought KSA insurance at the causeway booths before going over. This includes roadside assistance. Tried this and, surprise surprise, it worked perfectly. Very helpful guy on the phone, flatbed arrived in an hour, off we toddle to Bahrain. All very painless.
However, I have now discovered that, unless you specifically ask at the causeway for this insurance to be comprehensive, by default they provide third party cover only. As the concrete block seemed reluctant to provide me with any insurance details, and no-one else was involved who I could pin the blame on, I am about to be stuck with the entire repair bill. Waiting now for the first estimate to arrive.
A salutory lesson - read the small print, even if it's in Arabic.

Ouch, that is just nasty.
This has always worried me when going in to Oman for a "hoon" in that they only give you Third Party insurance at the border. I dread to think what would happen if this happened to me (possibly the same i.e. suck it up big time)
Before anyone asks, the hoon car is a 97 E36 M3 for which I can only get Third party insurance for in the UAE anyways.
