Importing classics to the UAE
Discussion
I do not think you have to be a dealer or local to import older cars. As I said, you can import anything you like, but getting it registered is the problem, which I believe is where the Sharjah Classic car club comes into play.
Seriously, how do you think some of the track/race prepped cars come in? It does not matter what you import, what you afterwards is where it gets interesting

is it RHD or LHD? if the former then sharjah classic car club is your only hope.
if LHD then it is as simple as getting the documents together and shipping it, paying duties, and registering as normal. if its the car in your profile [lovely!] you could have it registered on normal dubai plates [dubai also runs a classic registration scheme now].
rbailey on here runs an mgb roadster on normal plates and knows all the tricks re: RTA testing procedures. Arnie at NFS racing can register ANYTHING [did an s1 e type roaster when i was up there last] and there are a few classic 911/912 owners on these forums - RSPhil, VanquishDubai and the chap who's moniker I can never remember with the lovely red 911. The first 2 imported their cars so can also offer advice in that respect. a few regular importers also reside at www.gulfpetrolheads.com
i can also recommend mike brodie at petrasco for handling shipping and customs.
please bring it, i can then conspire to plot your financial downfall so you have to sell it to me for a song

Hi mate,
I have bought in some cars in the past few years. Gis a call in the week and happy to talk you through the process. It really comes down to what you are importing, age of the car, condition, is it a replica or original. (I have imported a FFR Cobra to build and a 911 RS Replica recently) so happy to talk you through. Also, I can recommend some shippers who will help do all the paperwork for you so all you have to do is rock up and drive it out the gate.
0508763027 is my no.
Cheers
Luke

Guys - thanks so much for these extremely useful replies. I was almost ready to give up.
Car is a LHD 1972 911. I've owned it for years so I'm guessing I can do without the original (or indeed any) bill of sale - I have the V5 and the import papers (it came from Holland).
Plan is to drive it here all winter then strip it down for a rebuild over next summer. Dreaded rust on the headlights and gutters has got to it while it's been sitting at home in the UK, so it's fix it or see it rot to death time.
If I'd realised there were so many other old 911s here I'd have brought it years ago.

i also know a chap restoring a 930 targa in his garage in the ranches, including self building the engine.
count me in if you need help with the build.
