Anyone in Qatar
Discussion
Hello all,
I am currently working as a consultant on the new airport project inn Doha and wondering if there are many people from here in the area. If so, is there much to do in the area for like minded Pistonheaders. I have been here for just less than a week so far so thought I would put up a post and see whos around and if there are many things happening.
I am wanting to get out and about while I am here, when work permits, and wanting to see as much of the island as possible and experience whatever there is to offer.
I know of the circuit that the Moto GP use, is it worth a few hours over there at all, do they do any kind of experience laps around it (when I hire a car it wont be trackday worthy).
Anything else anyone can suggest as good to do or must do would be appreciated. And if there are any car meets or the such like.
Cheers all.

Two Edinlusher's ending up in the middle east.
My mate works on the airport project (construction) and does not to a lot in his off time except come to Duabi for the weekend for R&R.
I've been here two years now so PM me if you want any info on anything. As for what to do - there's not a lot; heading to Dubai is probably the best bet for entertainment. From looking at the Losail website, I think they only offer track days. There is a motorcycle experience where you can ride their motorcycles round the track.
I've been here for 5 years - the desert sands have ravagged my once youthful looks but Im still here - being a scotch I like to dodge the tax man.
Not a lot of stuff going on in ramadan to be honest, bit dull but the roads are quiet so you can take advantage and do some public street drifitng to brighten the day.
Recommend you going a hotel leisure membership - intercon or hyatt do short term deals - then at least you'll have a place to spend time and meet people.

HEY HEY! I'm in Qatar have been here now for 2 years, the internet at home is broken so I haven't been on over the weekend, not that I would of been on anyway as I've spent every spare second in my new car haha!
I don't know if there are any car meets as such...but I'm usually about and up for a beverage if you're so inclined. I spend most of my weekends helping my friend with teaching scuba diving but the quad biking in the desert is fun, as is wakeboarding and jet-ski hoonage. All can be done relatively cheap!
I've not been to Losail Circuit yet but fully intend on doing a track session when its cooler out. If you see an orange corvette Z06 about be sure to gimmie a wave!

Where abouts do you teach scuba? I am looking to learn and went along to a club last week but they wouldnt be prepared to teach a noob so I was sent off like a scolded cat.
Is there any place to hire the quad bikes for desert bashing or the like, definately sounds fun, as does the jetsking.
Where abouts are you, I am currently in the Marriott but moving to the Movenpic. Do you know of any of these (hush hush) drinking places then?

If you went to BSAC you are better off not going with them anyway, couple of nice guys but there are alot of fuddy duddy sorts who are more interested in ticking boxes than enjoying the diving! I help a mate out who teaches on the side here, he has a boat on the Ritz Carlton marina and we use that to go out to shipwrecks off shore, everything from Supertankers to Tug Boats.
If you go to sealine you can see all the Quad Bikes lined up on the side of the road, you just pull over and ask to rent one, (bring your ID). Jetskis can be rented from the Jetski Ramp on the other side of Zig-Zag towers just after the bridge next to them.
As for drinking places, I think it's fair to say I know them all, hahaha! During Ramadan we keep it to villas and apartments mostly. I've got 2 bottles of Jack, 2 bottles of Johnny Green and a bottle of Gin and a crate of beer and assorted wines for ramadan (well it's better to have too much than run out).
I see you are into photography, I do alot of underwater photography and I bought an DSLR for the Mrs for her birthday although I use it alot too. There are some great places to go in qatar for pictures, the Souq Waqif and the abandoned fishing village near Zubara are great locations. There is even an abandoned city (but you need to get permission to go see it as it's fenced off).

What else do you need? Oh yeah, cash Also, there is not a cash machine at Sealine resort.
Also, the Honda City does not perform well on loose sand, nor have a proper tow hitch.

I have only been out here a week now, so dont really know many of the places you mentioned, though I have seen the Pearl on maps and I think we can see it (just) from the hotel lounge.
Not brought my camera (SLR) with me this trip but will be doing for subsequent times so hoping to get out and about shooting something, saw the crossed swords last night which I might try to get sometime.
