I fear the response may be a negative one but besides the acknowledged Jebel Hafeet road are there any recommendations for decent driving roads in the region that you have come across? I guess by decent roads (or sections) I mean ones that involve some bends would be a useful starting point so at least there is a challenge of blending steering, braking and power.

Are there any little gems that you have come across?

1) The Sharjah to Khalba road. Its boring for the first 10km's or so, but then it gets interesting (plus has a couple of tunnels)

2) RAK Border (UAE) to Khasab, Northern Oman - simply stunning (I have a few vids of this road, will try and find)

Part of it www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNQ0ot8DVyg

3) Take Exit 119 off the E111 (close to RAK) and follow it all the way to Dibba. The truck road is a bit nasty and boring, but once you get in the moutains - lovely jubbly.)

Another one:

4) Just past the Hatta Fort Hotel, circa 300m (heading to Oman Border crossing), take a left turn. Nice little drive through low level mountains etc. Come to a RA, take 9-10 o'clock exit and carry on. You have to be careful on this road - lots of goats etc and wadi crossings where the road surface is concrete rather than tarmac and can throw the car off balance.

Forgot to add: this road joins up to the Sharjah to Khalba road.

Excellent, thank you. With the family soon disappearing for the summer I feel a road trip coming on, keep any suggestions coming...

Had a copy - threw it away.

I highly recommend the RAK to Khasab drive.

I have said magazine in front of me. It's a bit st to be honest as it includes such summer outings as Fossil Rock, Al Maha Desert Resort, Hatta Pools and Liwa. I wouldn't be getting out of the AC in any of those places!

Only real roads discussed are to Dibba, Jebel Hafeet, Fujairah Road and Khasab.

I bought it for the road trips and was sadly disappointed also... I've done a few of the trips they list and fun though they are, they're not really hoons as such!

Have a drive around Massafi - some good roads in that area too.

basically, you need to head towards the mountains (Fujariah/RAK etc) where its not flat.
