70k a year is pretty cheap though. I'd like to take it, put a couple of old sofas in there and a nice coffee machine and just wander around everyone else's yards between naps. Not sure I'd make much money like but it seems a nice life.

So apart from turning into a really big living room, no-one fancies opening up a car showroom then??!!

I would love to run a garage over here. Must be potential for ex pats wanting to buy off someone they can trust??
Scour dubizzle, pay low price, clean up, flog on. Start small, take the odd punt on something interesting, build up, move to tastier motors.........

I've always enjoyed buying a selling cars, but memories of six months in the trade as a 18 year old put me off - every evening and weekend in work is tits, no matter how much you like motors.

I would like to spend more time on a sofa drinking coffee during the day though....

There was a British guy over here in Doha did that years ago and made a fortune. When I started in 2006 he was the guy to go to for cars if you were an expat. HR at work even gave me his name in the welcome pack! Nice business if you can get the right contacts.

I agree...imagine having a showroom full of English petrol heads.... It would be the busiest showroom there.

So...

It shouldnt be too much of a problem, surely???

Well, if a few of us went in with the Initial investment, so 3 or 4 people to cover the rent etc. I'm sure getting motors into the showroom would be easy enough through word of mouth, even advertise to sell for people with a kick-back for the showroom. Get a website going, advertise in the usual places, and we're up and running. I know a local guy who I trust and he loves his cars. Then there's a few on here who seem to be very good at buying cars and moving them along with a small profit.
Later down the line, offer the other services.... valets, repairs, facelifts etc.

So, who's in for 50k?! I would.

That....is very tempting.

IIRC 4x4 motors and the like were started the same way, but went the way of employing regional staff once they grew big and ended up the same as the rest. Regional staff are cheap...

You will need a local partner as an agent to skim a load of your profit though, won't you?

Depends. If you use an Investment company, they will act as your sponsor and waive all rights for an annual fee....I was quoted 21k a year for something else.
I've emailed the guy and the 70k is the rent charged by the land owner. I guess the 150k is his leaving present, but that is negotiable.
Sign a 5 year lease, pay the rent monthly, and give matey-boy 100k to sign it over. Alternatively, look for another unit where there isnt someone trying to relieve you of 150k. No idea if there ant many around...I might go and have a look.

If there's a sofa and a coffee machine I'm in. I may have found our first item of stock too; there's a lovely tip 964 in silver that's caught my eye....looks a bit dusty to me though.

I think you'd have to keep it 'western' to differentiate in what is a physically crowded maket - well, for all of the deal handling roles anyway.

We could call it the 'what car musings, er, shop' and Eccentric M could provide prints for the walls. shirt could take things apart and IanUAE could put them back together again. We could sponsor a race te.....sounds like a winner to me!

I'm doing sums.

Obviously, I'm still awake- quick note to fellow locals- don't read a text message whilst walking up marble steps, in flip flops- you may well miss your target with an amazing lack of spatial awareness, and smash the bejesus out of your big toe.

For clarification- 'smashed' in this instance means loud cracking noise, instant swelling, nail lifting after one hour and a toe as bent as Graham norton.

Still, could be worse, could need to be up in three and a half hours for work.

Oh........

It's been sold already! I'm off to Al Aweer to see if ther are any empty places.

Dusty, know the feeling mate. I did the same in the pool of the Habtoor Grand...didn't see the step and kicked it. You should have heard the language! Shocked parents were running to get their kids out of the pool!
