our monthly bill went from 900 to 3500 this month, despite us hardly being there. any tips for getting a result from DEWA or should i just headbutt the wall? need to know why the increase incase we have a problem.

You have an underground leak. DEWA will charge you AED30 to inspect the meter for a fault, and tell you it's fine. They will then tell you any leaks on your side of the water meter are your responsibility. You will continue to pay an exorbitant cost until such time as you dig up your entire driveway and garden and replace the cheap Chinese pipes the original developer installed. HTH.

thought as much. any difference in that this is an apartment and the plant room is on the floor above? flat below have been reporting leaks into their place from ours but building maintenance can't find anything. can we just kick back on the building management co?

They may not been reading the meter the previous months and last month they did. I had this quite often at my last place, although that was a villa.

Is the increase in one specific utility ie either water or electric? I'll put my money on water.

If so and your downstairs neighbours are experiencing a leak I'd suggest that the tank for your flat is overflowing somewhere??

think ian might be on the money. it was 5k worth of water used in 2 weeks where neither of us were in the country. either the cat's been taking baths or they've actually read the meter

Still no joke though, eh? Just pay them half this month and hopefully it'll go back to "normal" next month.

Nice work! Do you taps running and lights on when you've had a row?!

Reminded me of a few days ago when we had no water for 2 days. Couldn't even use the toilets and things were looking bad, till FIL grabbed a bucket and used the pool water to flush the toilets! There were queues out the door!

Not been on PH for a long time - sorry to resurrect this topic, having just had two 2.5K Dewa bills (all water, despite not having been in the villa), a man from DEWA has just taken my meter away to test .... Even with all taps etc off, the replacement meter is still whirring merrily away....any hopes that I had a faulty meter seem to have vanished, am I now looking at a leak somewhere? Any thoughts? TIA

Villa or Apartment? If villa suspect a leak between the meter and the ground tank or the float valve on the ground tank is not shutting the water off when the tank is full.

We've had this problem so many times it's unreal.

Another possibility to what Ian is suggesting is that if your water pump is also running with no taps on you could have an underground leak in one of the pipes to garden taps. Look out for pools of water in the garden and/or subsidence.

Thanks all - villa not apartment.

DEWA fitted a temporary meter yesterday, reset to zero..... when I got hom elast night it was already 533, this morning when I left it was 1453.... looks like a leak.

Maintenance company out this morning, opened the underground water tank and has said a faulty ball cock was just causing water to fill and then overflow into the waste supply. This would explain why the meter was still turning even though all water was off in the house and the water pumps weren't pumping. Replacement cost - AED160.

My next fight will be with the landlord I think for not maintaining his property properly....can see that going well!!
