Ok, so it looks like I have got the job I want in Dubai, not sure when I will start yet but got time to think about what car to buy.
Obviously checked out Dubizzle for prices and have narrowed it down to a varied selection.
Basically, o have always wanted a M3, so was looking at e46's. I am quite sold on the idea of a nice example.
Same story with the Z4 M coupe, really want one, but prob not that practicable? Also only 2 seats.

Now, I'm also thinking that a bit of yank muscle might be a good alternative, something loud and powerful, so dodge challangers and mustangs have been looked at too. - I know the interior is a big let down in comparison to the BMWs, but I might be able to live with it!

My 3rd and finals thoughts are with a 4x4. Purely because I will be getting a motocross bike out there and will need to tow. But also, I might do some dune bashing on my days off too. Is anyone on PH into off roading there?
So a few options here. For off roading the Jeep Wrangler is a good option. But just for towing Range Rover Sports look like a fairly good value car out there. And, I have been looking at Hummers too.

A couple mates living there say get a 4x4 cause everyone has big cars in Dubai and you will not have anywhere decent to drive the M-cars.

Another factor is maintenance. I hear it is very expensive there. And I guess if you have to be careful with what car you buy in regards to the costs of spares.

So does anyone have any experience with any of the following, and also, out of interest what would be your preference for Dubai?

Price wise - well, probably 100-160,000 AED I think.

So:
BMW M3 - prob e46 - about 80,000 AED
BMW Z4 M Coupe

Ford Mustang 2009-2011
Dodge Challanger 2006+

Range rover sport
Jeep wrangler - kitted out for off roading
Hummer H2

Or, also open for any other suggestions!

For the money you are talking about, you can get both a "road" car and a 4x4. There are some very good roads for thrashing your car on so the M and the yank tanks would do well here, and do do well.

Like any older car, you should make sure you get them checked over before buying. For the BMW's I would use either Das Autowerks or X-Service Centre (both BMW specialists and independent), for 4x4's - Saluki would be the best bet.

For me - E46 M3 or a nice E39 M5 + a jeep wrangler or other car (Mitsu Pajero or similar)

Ideally I would like to keep the spending to about 100k, but could stretch to the upper limit for the right car.

I will have a few weeks out there to look around, and hopefully by then I will have more of an idea what will best suit me....

Do not speak / contact shirt (Phil) otherwise you will never buy a car or buy a track only car 1st.

In all honesty, the Euro brands can be expensive to maintain. For AEd100K you will not get two cars in "good fettle", both will require work to get them tip top OR one will be good, the other require a lot of work.

Cash is king - if you have folded crispy notes, your money can go a long way.

i admire the OP's indecisiveness hehe

i would forget the RRS if you want to go offroad, there is a big difference between a slightly muddy field and the desert. cost of ownership of a cheap wrangler is next to nothing, an AED20k towcar/dune basher will hold it's money forever. a full fat rangie is a glorious prospect but even at the top end of you're budget you'll find them used and abused.

it is posible to get a Z4M under 100k, but they are like hen's teeth. i see plenty on the road but very very few for sale. the cayman s is much more ubiquitous and you could just about get a manual for under 100k.

i drive a jacked up wrangler as a daily and have a gts clubman track car for fun. i love the jeep but it isn't refined [suits the owner, hehe] and i could imagine a wife would moan to fk about it.

if i had more space at the moment i'd:

keep the clubby
buy a cheaper wrangler
buy the manual z3 coupe on dubizzle [i wants it, precious]

all 3 would would come in under 80k

the 100k is what I'm roughly looking to spend as a sort of 'cover most bases' price.

If I was getting a Z4M, then I would pay pay more, up to about 145k, likewise for the RRS etc. - Also the RRS would be used as the daily as well as for towing the motorbike, but not for off roading.

The M3 is less than 100k so, I think that might be the best bet for me really, then, as you say buy a cheap dune basher to use for towing and playing about in.

So I suppose the last decision to make is about the daily. - Do I want a big V8 Yank, or the M3.

If the difference in maintenance would be really significant then I should be looking down the Yank route I guess!

the comment about availability applies to z4m's at any price. last two i saw were at 125 and 140k respectively. i've seen lower milage examples at 80-90k, so i guess it depends on how much the seller plays on the scarcity value.

i don't see the point of the RRS here. you will not get the benefit of the car's purpose. an airsprung L322 will be a far better wafter and will be able to go offroad.

FWIW, at 160k you could get a manual porsche 997
