Went to get my motorbike licence today only to be told that I have AED7,000 worth of fines. These turn out to be salik charges the mrs has accrued. Further investigation reveals she hasnt got a tag, as we both forgot. Each charge is AED400! How the feck does that work. Is it a mistake or do they really charge that? I thought it was only aed4 charge each time.

Seems that fines go up to 400 for each time you pass without a tag. Not amused.

I ran up a fairly hefty bill when I had no balance in my account but not anywhere near your level! If you have a tag but no balance it's a 50 dirham charge each time.

From what I remember 400 dirhams is the correct fine for not having a tag and passing a toll gate.

Not great timing I suppose.

Got any 'wasta' bud?

That's about the only way out of this I can see.

Serious advice here: if your wife can act well, make her go to the Barsha station and cry her eyes out. If she's convincing enough, some kind-hearted official will take pity and reduce the fine to something more manageable.

yes

I have seen this tactic work with officials over here . . . albeit in a slightly different scenario.

Get the wife to arrive on a horse and plead that if they don't waive the fines this is the only transport she and the kids will be able to afford.....

That's not a bad idea....tis the only thing we're long of ATM!
I've emailed them to complain, so we'll see.

You forgot to get a Salik tag and you have e-mailed them to complain? Did your message go something like....

Dear Sir,

I find it preposterous that you levee me with a fine for attempting to avoid paying road toll charges over an extended time period. How very dare you.

My best mates wife got a traffic fine in Sharjah and the head of police let him off the fine if he promised to QUOTE "beat her soundly".

He had made the remark as a cheeky comment but the copper was serious.
