So basically I am employed by an American company, permanent staff based out of Dubai although I work on a rotational contract. I was sent to work on a project in Iraq with an agreed uplift on my salary. Its now past pay day and I have not received this extra bonus I have spoken to both my boss and HR and have now been told that I will not be getting it & because I have complained about this I am now being removed from the project and getting sent home.

Does anyone have any advice if this is illegal under Dubai law to not be paid what is owed by a employer, I only have email evidence from my boss that he agreed to this increase.

The email will help I would have thought.

The Ministry of Labour are actually supposed to be quite good with this sort of thing, a friend was let go and they issued all sort of threats, blocking his passport, not paying his gratuity etc and they get it sorted much quicker than we expected.

One potential issue could be the contract that is lodged with them won't have been amended.

I would print off all correspondance, take pay slips etc and pay them a visit Sunday morning (they will be asleep now smile)

Good luck

i'm by far an expert, but as a contractor you have pretty much zero ground to stand on. what exactly is the arrangement you have re: permie/contractual roles?

I am full time staff not a contractor. Looks like all have to take it up with the labour ministry

so you're a permie on rotation? regardless of the facts, i reckon it will read like you were sent to one area, didn't want to work there for no uplift, so you were brought back, depending on the length of time you were in iraq, you might be banging your head against a wall. i'd be going via HR/your boss before the ministry as putting someone's nose out of joint at work will NOT help.

i'd seek advice, and also do the softly-softly approach via internal channels. an ex colleague's recent experience was enough for me to question the realities of job security out here.
