Bit of a random question to ask I know, but I've learnt that Ph'ers turn up in all sorts of places, and as there isn't a Beruit section for PH members that I can see in the areas section I thought I'd ask here as you're an eclectic bunch of people in the lounge.

Anyway if you do happen to live their or know anyone who does.....could you drop me a mail or post on here cool

And yes I do realise that it may get a little interesting if the Americans or Israel start dropping bombs (but they do have very nice oranges, Jaffa is one of the national brands ), hence the question.

I live in Govan (Glasgow).

I think it might be twinned with Beirut! And Basra. And Homs.

I don't live in Beruit, but feel it my duty to advise you that Jaffas are available in the UK now.

Oh yes, to be clear I'm not especially interested in the oranges, I just thought I'd mention it as a positive aspect of an area that otherwise has something of an image problem.

Because I'm quite likely to be ending up there for about 10 months, there don't seem to be any well used expat forums for the place, and I don't know anyone there. All I know is that it's the meat in an Iran/ Israel sandwich, or maybe more like the pickle that's on the side of an Iran, Syria, Israel sandwich. And that they have nice oranges. And allegedly some very good night clubs.

Oh I get it. Like saying 'It's a st hole, but those bagpipe things are pretty cool' or 'I'd rather fking die than live there, but they do have a lovely steel industry'...

Hmm, well no idea why you would be heading that way but..
At present as a client state of Syria/Iran its not really a place I would pick to go to for rather obvious reasons.
If it doesn't all kick off one way or another then I'm told by people I know who've been there on business that its pretty nice, a cultured feel and lively, in a good way.

Seriosuly though, it really isn't a place to go to if you can avod it until the Syrians situation calms down and the Israelies decide what to do about the Iranian nuclear programme.

Some ok wine. Try Chateau Musar from the Bekaa Valley made by the Hochar family. Spicy red that goes well with Lebanese food.

My neice went there last week on the way to skiing in the lebanon ! She said it was very welcoming in terms of the people but somewhat surreal at times with holes in buildings and wrecked houses next to new developments . She was comfortable there though and the pics ofthe snow were amazing in the mountains.

Hmmm. Beirut in here and a question about a fast boat in Boats & Planes.....

Mate, if you want to smuggle something, I would strongly suggest you steer well clear of the Lebanon

Kudos

That was Libya, although she may as well be a war correspondant with the places she's been to.

OP, ask this on the Middle East forum. Lots of guys go to Beruit and love it. I've heard nothing but good things about it, and am to holiday there myself at some stage.

The town centre has been redeveloped with no vehicles allowed, very nice it is to. Yes there are still security patrols stationed on street corners and seeing upatched bullets holes on building walls takes some getting used to.

I would still accept a posting there rather than some other countries in the Gulf.

My cousin had been there, she loved it. From what I understand it's very modern and can be quite pricey.
