My search for motoring nirvana continues and one of my all time favourite cars is now on the radar.

Issue is it's over seven years old so the usual suspects RSA and AXA won't touch it. Anyone punting older metal got any tips on getting comprehensive cover?

(p.s. I know that this has been covered before but I couldn't find it in a search)

Get down to one of the registration centres (Tasjeel / Al Shamil) and the insurance guys who sit there should be able to sort it out without a problem. They seem pretty cheap too.

To be honest, I don't think you can here, which is a crying shame.

Best I could get for my 15 y/o beamer was Third party, fire and theft. In the end I went with 3rd party only.

I'm sure I remember someone mentioning some sort of top-up insurance; bought from an international broker or something.

Chartis Private Clients Group will offer fully comp but they require a minimum fleet and house value that brings the total premium up to a very large number. So that's not really a solution for one vehicle.

Someone looked into all assets insurance with a UK insurer plus 3rd party in the UAE a while back and posted the results. Might have been 85Carrera?

I also have this problem, and there is now an additional factor which I need to resolve.

I have a 1996 Caterham 7 which I have, since 2005 shipped to Europe every year so that I can take part in club events and usually do a tour in Europe as well.

Up untill last year I could get green card cover from AXA for Europe, albeit only third party, but last year they stopped doing it, and so did everyone else, because they all did it through AXA.

I may have a solution, through a specialost in UK and will post if turns out OK.

I've found a couple of IVRM options - comprehensive top up to a local TPFT cover. Hopefully hear back tomorrow so will post details when I know if it works or not.

i'd also try the tassel, couldn't believe how cheap it was for the cover i got.

would be interested to hear how you get on. the wrangler is '05 [not registered til 07] so i'll be TP if i keep it more than 12mths

Yeah, spill the beans!

Got me thinking, I have just had the renewal quote for the Stang, thats an 06 but is still Fully Comp, is that because I have owned it for 4 years?

I have fully comp on my 2004 BMW 3-series. Got the insurance at Al Shamil registration centre (Bur Dubai) and nothing was mentioned about the 7 year limit.

I have the same issue. Just bought a 280SL Pagoda and now trying to find comp insurance. Also about to buy a 61 e type - what is making me hesitate is the insurance issue...

I use this lot to top up the insurance on my Porsche. Is about GBP 700 on an agreed value of GBP 15000. Fortunately, I've not had to make a claim yet so can't comment on that aspect.

Yep, Clements is the place. Got a great quote back from them today. You buy third party only locally and they cover the rest.

Opens a whole new world of opportunities though...

As it happens, I was at Tasjeel this evening re-registering the 'hoe. I asked the insurance brokers there about getting fully comprehensive insurance for an older vehicle. They said they can do anything from 2001 onwards.
