Finally managed to get our Marriage Certificate stamped by the right people in Cyprus where we got married - next is getting it recognised in the UAE.

Do I have to go to Abu Dhabi to get it stamped or can it be done in Dubai - Ministy of Foreign Affairs apparently.

As usual there's lots of conflicting advice knocking about - anyone done it?

The search facility is currently under maintenance otherwise I would have a look for you, but I asked a similar question sometime last year and got a link to a govt website that summarised the process.

As I recall, I had to get a document stamped by the British Embassy/Consulate, after which I went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (it's the building at the corner of the big car park in the middle of the Embassies area in Dubai). The latter process took only 20 minutes.

Do I still need to do the British thing as we were married in Cyprus or is that to prove I'm a Brit and who I say I am?

Hmm, pass. I have a feeling as long as you have a certificate officially recognised by a country (rather than your country of origin), the MoFA is looking to stamp that (ie "we the UAE Govt recognise this as a legal certificate"). Could be wrong.

This whole place is so messed up.

Ok - well that concurs with the other info I have so I shall try the foreign affairs place this week.

No doubt the rules will change day by day...

MOFA is the place you need. It was where all the Embassies are located when I did mine, may well have moved, not sure.

The ticketing system when you get there is utterly crap and you'll be a good hr or so waiting.

Fairly painless though, hand over money for stamp!

I went there yesterday to be told I need to go to Abu Dhabi and get the Cypriot Embassy stamp on it - this would be the Cypriot Embassy that I called numerous times and when I couldn't get a straight answer, actually went there with the documents to get a proper response.

Oddly enough, they never said they needed to stamp it, even when I specifically asked, just needed the stamp from Cyprus.

Oh well, just add another 400km to the car...

We had issues with ours. The Government dept wanted it attested by the British embassy. We obliged, but they still had a problem and the office boy phoned me, apologised a million times, then asked if could attend the "meeting". I turn up in my suit and the guy stamped it without even asking me a single question.

ps-The suit in question was a dark blue pin-stripe, if that helps. rolleyes

Biggest mistake I made when getting my family's visas at Fujairah Immigration was not wearing a suit. I turned up in civvies and the "captain" refused to believe I was British, and said my family were not eligible. This despite all the correct paperwork.

We got married in the Seychelles...

Stamp from the Brit Embassy in Seychelles.

Stamp from Brit Embassy in Dubai verifying the above stamp (they keep copies of the signature on record).

Stamp from Ministry of Foreign Affairs down near Etisalat Building in Deira.

Job Jobbed.

Although we didn't get the stamp in the Seychelles and had to sent the cert back to get it done, it was a pretty simple process.

When getting married in Seychelles it is recommendable to get an Authentication Letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (in Seychelles).
Then their won't be an problems in UAE with the legalization ofthe marriage docs.
