Well, Hello! I'm new in Dubai
Discussion
Hi there, just thought I would stick my head above the parapet and say hello seeing as I'm about 10 days into what appears to be my new life in Dubai. While it was hard to leave friends and family behind, I still pine after my C63AMG which my father is looking after as I refuse to sell it.
Hope to meet some of you if there are any beer or driving related events in the near future!

Beer? Well, ok..
Welcome. You must have landed a couple of days after me. If its not too late, (i.e you've not lost your passport into the visa system..) take copies of it, plus your employment visa and passport entry stamps. If I'd known you could use them to get a sim from Du, (PAYG), I'd have spent a lot less on my UK mobile in the first couple of weeks here. At least I think you can. Will know more in about an hour..
Anyone tries to charge you a premium for yearly rental on the basis of not having the visa yet, (happened to me last week), tell them to stick it. Found a couple of agents who don't appear to be complete shisters when it comes to long term rental that I can put you in touch with if you like. If you haven't got a place for a month at least now, start searching now and having just been through the pain, I can tell you a few places to maybe aim towards/away from.
Ermm... If I think of anything more, I'll let you know.

Hi everyone, and Psychobert thanks of the advice. I'm about to starting the whole apartment process and finding a two bed in Dubai Marina that isn't going to break the bank. Would be great to pick your brains on what you've learned so far. DM me if you are about this weekend and I will happily swap beer for information!

best to wait until you have the visa. long odds of it not coming through, but in that event you are still liable for the rental agreement.i won't get home til around 9pm anyway claire. yay, pissed australian welcome party...

Hmm.. I can see the point in that. Personally, I've just taken a hotel apartment in tecom for a month, partly to avoid that possibility, (doubt very much, but you never know..) and also partly to give myself the chance to look around. Everyone in the office got very excited yesterday when it looked like I might have my medical already, but then it turned out the office in tecom had never heard of me. Welcome to Dubai was the chorus when I got back to the office.. i won't get home til around 9pm anyway claire. yay, pissed australian welcome party...
