before i start, i believe the answer will be no, but anyway:

i hired a car from a company that rhymes with censored on the 31st dec. rental period was 7 days and the cost was 380dhs. car was supposed to be some tiny ford thing but ended up being given a focus. car was booked through the call centre and collected from the airport.

on the 7th i rang the call centre to extend the rental by a week. was told this was fine, but would be 380dhs. i agree and card is charged.

on the 14th i again call to extend by a week. this time they tell me that it'll be 140AED for any extension days and won't give me a weekly rate. for convenience, i accepted for 7more days.

thing is, they charged my card for this week plus the difference in what i paid for that second week and what it'd have been at 140AED/day. i'm a bit miffed as it's going to cost be the thick end of 3000dhs for 3 weeks in a bloody ford.

so, in terms of the retrospective charge given they'd already agreed and taken payment, can they do this? do we have any consumer rights at all?

ETA

No guessing! smile

There is a consumer rights part of the govt here in Dubai - all shops display their contact details at the till. Personally I'd head down to their office and refuse to leave until someone took some notice. Or, I'd put it down to experience and walk away....

Depends on how miffed you are!

I don't know who effective it will be but they have been pushing the consumer rights heavily for the last 6 months or so, covers all DED companies which I would imagine 'rational' are.

Have you approached the car hire people yet? If so without joy, I would get in touch with the below.

Good luck

very miffed at the way they do it. i rang to query the 1200dhs they charged to my credit card yesterday and was told the above. it's just blatant that they know they can get away with it. they just keep repeating that there's a note on the screen saying what the additional rate is, yet ignore the fact i booked and agreed [and bloody paid for!] at a different rate.

i will try the office but expect to get nowhere. it is annoying that i will likely write off £150 simply due to hassle. if this were the UK i'd be livid and expect the appropriate response from head office, but here i'm trying to shrug it off as all i'm gonna get is a couple more weeks annoyance before ending up in the same position.

turns out that:

on the corporate website there are 2 numbers. the 8am-6pm one is the head office, who will hire out at the cheap rates you see on the website.

the 2nd, 24hr, no. is the franchise, a totally seperate entity. extending your booking with them attracts a far higher price [almost double]. they don't tell you this until they sting your credit card.

the franchise had no record of the payments i made to the head office, so believe that i still owe them about AED 2k. there was a slight stand off when i laughed at this and spent a good 30mins showing them the payment refs. on my blackberry and repeating everything 5-6times.

someone from the corporate office is supposed to me calling me later to sort it all out.
