making up for earlier dithering, i now have two cars having just bought a tonka toy:

http://dubai.dubizzle.com/classified/autos4x4s/jee...

i spent 2hrs with the seller last night including a long test drive, and a friend also checked it out at lunch. needs new bushes, but that's it. moreover i trust the seller as he is an expat [director for a well known telecoms co.], offroad enthusiast and knew the car inside out.

he wants a painless sale as he's bought a new wrangler and needs the space. we both know it is unlikely to pass the RTA inspection with the spotlights and steel front bumper. he had to remove them for it's last one about 6mths ago.

we have agreed to transfer the ownership and i'll put it through the inspection. just wondering what the drill is regarding doing that. aiming for tonight or tomorrow morning to do this.

he says we park the car at mine and take the plates & our passports [inc. visa copy] and do it all at the RTA.

am i ok then to simply insure the car and drive down at the weekend for the inspection? can i even insure it without the inspection first?

dusty has agreed to lend me his front bumper for a few hours [cheers mate!] and the condition of the car isn't in question. just don't want to be in a catch22 situation over the paperwork.

Unless I have missed something you will have to have it inspected to transfer it, sure that is the process.

ps - it looks sweet, these are a lot of fun.

Where was the work done, Robbie's?

he seemed to think not, even called his mate to check. i guess i'll ask him to meet me at the RTA and go from there. is it still possible to transfer the ownership when it fails the inspection so i can sort it from there on?

work done at aev i think.

I may be wrong, but don't think so.

Unsure what happens if it fails, I wouldn't risk it and take it down there with you, minus any offending items!

Afraid you do have to have it inspected, just prior to transfer.

Congrats! The Jeep looks very nice.

I'm afraid that I'm coming down on the side of no inspection pass, no ownership transfer. I recently bought a second hand car and I needed the inspection papers to make the transfer.

bum!

lesson one - never trust a thing a frenchman says! hehe

i'll call him after work but i fear i'll end up at barsha RTA to have them explain it to him. may as well try and test it whilst there.

how much are inspection and transfer fees? does the seller or buyer normally pay this?

Inspection is pretty minimal, low enough to treat yourself and take the right hand lane and pay extra for express service, about 150 I think. I have a view that they are kinder on express customers, dunno why but worth a go.

My old man split the fees when he sold his CLK in the summer, don't think there is a standard.

Go in, first counter on right.

Pay for express.

While you are doing this, get the seller to get in line for the inspection.

Pass test.

Do paperwork.

Get plates (if required)

You can also get your insurance done at the same time if you need it- out the back door, round to the right.

Bumper available to suit if you need it- you know where i am.

Use the Express Service. Both of you walk into the RTA Office at barsha,
hand in keys and Rego card to guy/gal behind desk,
go and grab a cup of coffee or whatever from the shop next door,
sit and chat with ex owner,
wait for them to tell you the car has passed (it has to pass),
pay AED200 for Express Service
pay AED150 for Inspection (think thats what it is now),
transfer ownership - not sure, but AED350 rings a bell (could be wrong),
ex-owner has to pay all fines under his name,
sign a few bits of paper

If you have no Insurance, you can get from one of the Counters (go Third Party only circa AED600)

New Rego card will be made and away you go - give ex-owner cash for the car and she is yours

Make sure you have photocopies of passport & visa page plus Drivers License (front and back). I am not sure if they need the ID card or not, but if you have, make photcopies of that as well.

As everyone above has said. You HAVE to have the inspection if you want to re-register the car in your name.

he says he has been to the RTA office and spoken to someone there. he says they will give us a selling contract which gives me ownership and 2 weeks to make the RTA check, during which time it cannot be driven on the road [so trailer to RTA i guess]. he says this is what he did when he bought it from abu dhabi.

don't shoot the messenger, i did hold the above advice to be true. i will go with him to the office and see what they say.

well, much as i was sceptic, it turns out the seller was correct.

he met me at my house, parked the car in my spot and removed the plates. we then drove to barsha RTA and he cancelled the plates and paid to transfer the ownership. i was given a possession certificate and the RTA kept my visa/passport copies. i gave him the cash, he gave me the keys and we both went home. took 5 mins tops.

the RTA guy said all i need to do is remove the bumpers/lights, get the car transported to the test centre and take the possession cert. test and issuance of new plates will be done as normal.

i know this may still sound like a faff, but i didn't want to nix the sale over it and the seller had a guy wanting to export it to oman so was being quite insistent that we close the deal today.

the car looks bloody ridiculous, i may start wearing wife beaters and trucker caps.

Well, firstly congrats. You learn something new here every day.

However, this puts the onus on you now to get the car through its inspection - what happens if it fails for something else??????

Shirt, you are most welcome to borrow the parts you require. I suggest that we remove the bits some stage on friday, as i may well be on site on saturday.
Lets not make it too early on friday though- I do enjoy a lie in on a friday.

Its nice to relax on the one morning you get a chance to, just to recharge the batteries.
Work is somewhat hectic at the moment- i have had a lot of very early starts recently- 4am- so it is nice to be able to have a good nights sleep.

The type of sleep where people dont disturb you.

The type where your utterly fkwitted mates dont ring to ask inane questions about ignition keys.

What sort of person would ring and disturb someone at night eh? Just to ask a stupid question?

There are some truly undesirable characters around, there really are.
