24/48hr test drives
Discussion
was looking at a black edition at RAK earlier. stunning looking thing on 911 turbo wheels with alacantara trimmed cabin, but way too many chips for comfort. a manual S seems to start at 120k which is really my top limit, so i was hoping to blag a drive from porsche approved so i have something to do xmas morning
other current thoughts are a jeep and the blue/white clubman from today's trackday. being next to so many tasty cars today [followed a stunning gt2 all the way to the autodrome] has made my wallet hotter.

Geez shirt, you still looking to buy a car?
Get it done already - Cayman is a cracking car, in S and regular form. You won't regret one.
Or you could do what I did today and buy an unregisterable RHD 1990 Nissan Skyline for 6k just for sts and giggles

Why don't you start with an hour's test drive from Porsche and take it from there?
I have to side with the chaps who say you'll know in 5 mins though, as the Cayman in normal or S trim is epic. I drove a couple of tiptronic ones which left me cold but with a manual they are hard to beat.
I'd stick to my earlier advice of trying to get one with the sports steering wheel (circular boss vs. triangular), sports exhaust and Bose stereo. PASM is good but rare and without it the Sports Chrono option is fairly limited.

I had a Cayman S for 2 years, what do you want to know about it that 1hr won't show you?
I bought mine after a 30min test drive, no regrets and it was a fantastic practical sports car that took everything I threw at it.
This was UK mind, over here it would still be a great car, but I felt a bit limited with a 2 seater over here sometimes. Don't have family support (read: car garage) to do stuff where you need space (home shopping etc...) so end up in a cab sometimes. I now rent a daily to stick miles on and do shopping in etc...
Tell me what you're comparing to/what you want and I'll give you my honest view.

where can you get to from al nabooda in 30mins? not far i'd wager. if i were to sink all my budget into one car [bearing in mind i've never spent anything near £20k on a car before] i would need to be confident in the purchase.I bought mine after a 30min test drive, no regrets and it was a fantastic practical sports car that took everything I threw at it.

Ok, but I think it's the exception rather than the rule to give customers cars for 48hr test drives. I'm afraid that just because you're spending more money than you're used to doesn't mean you can bag the keys to 50 cars for 48 hours a time to conduct your own detailed review, if that was the case there is no point buying, you may as well do 48 hour test drives all year. Try buying a GT3, you will be lucky to even get to drive it before placing a deposit, too many test pilots out there.going to look at a few car's this week and at the weekend. i may well be homing in on a solution
At least you get to sample driving a car for 30 mins on a test drive, what about things like headphones, you just buy those on reviews and experience of brand. I can figure out if I like a car by driving it for 10 mins, let alone 30. Just make your mind up and buy something dammit!!!
hmmm. i wasn't suggesting test driving half the used car market, or wasting a dealers time.
seems i'm quite the opposite to you in how i make amy mind up about any major purchase. cost is not the be all and end all, but feeling that i have got good value is. unless it's an enzo for 50dizzers, it's hard to assess that [for me anyway] in such short order.
as i said further up, i don't want to sound like a stuck record so will take my musings private. i am, however, most hopeful about an appointment i have made for tomorrow evening.
