i'm looking to go away for 2 weeks in early december. somewhere interestng culturally is a must, but i also could really use a few days just to lounge and be lazy. ordinarily i'd be on teletext holidays and looking at what routes the budget airlines fly. i simply have no idea where's cheap to get to from dxb.

to compound this, a friend will be joining me from the uk, so the destination needs to be handy for both of us.

india is an obvious choice but my colleagues who have been have been distinctly underwhelmed.

any ideas?

Lebanon - easy for both of you to get to. Plenty of culture, delicious food, great nightlife... the girls aren't too bad either!

You can even do a bit of skiing up in the mountains.

Great place all round.

Vietnam is brilliant according to everyone I know that has been, me and the mrs tiger were going to go but we only had a week which isn't long enough to do it justice apparently.

Beirut is also very high on my to visit list, not sure how 'budget' it is though.

I ******* hate India, although the Taj Mahal is interesting.

How about Croatia or somewhere like that?

After having worked in the Middle East, I have no intention of ever visiting India. I imagine it is the most disorganised place in the World!

India is a weird place.

Lovely country with lovely people - they just happen to hate each other.

The guys from my firm who live in Dehli all say that you have to employ a team to stop yourself going mad. Team generally consists of driver - who also does all the car stuff and other tasks out and about, house keeper (manages deliveries, works, other staff) cleaner, cook - also does the shopping, gardener - also does security.

That's four or five full time people just to stop you going mad...

Got to be Thailand.

I went to Koh Samui earlier this year and got a hotel on the beach (not 5 star but entirely acceptable) for USD 45 per night!

At the huge supermarmet you can get local excellent food for around 2-3 USD each.

Emirates have been offering low fares from Dubai, about AED 2,400.00 I think.

thanks for the suggestions, largely agrees with what i was thinking.

croatia and europe is definitely out, if i wanted cold weather i'd be going home for xmas! hehe

we have agreed to go 50/50 on the total flight costs, so was thinking india or phillipines given the low cost for me on that route. if we choose india it'll be the classic route of delhi [solely for the taj, have heard the city is a hole] jodhpur, jaipur etc.

would prob. do thailand if far east as neither of us have been and fits the bill nicely. friends who've done cambodia, laos, vietnam etc. recommend thailand as a good all-round start in the region.

also on the radar are sri lanka & madagascar if any of you have been?

I spent 7 1/2 years living in India.

1) 2 years in Jaipur
2) 3 1/2 in Calcutta / Kolkata
3) 2 years in Delhi

You needed the house staff (driver, cook, cleaner etc), mind you, you never had to lift a finger at home......

Flydubai? Planes are new and clean. Take a look at their website. Nepal is one option that may fit the bill. Or how about a road trip in Oman?

Sri Lanka is supposed to be lovely and is very cheap to get to and very cheap to stay and drink in. A number of friends go each year so I could get resort/hotel names and top tips if you are interested.

I will never go because we were robbed by a Sri Lankan and if I went I would really struggle to fight the urge to pay a PD to find him to allow me to take revenge. Which is strange because I am normally such a happy chap. Sri Lanka best avoided for me!

as a starter, who would you recommend for cheap flights to sri lanka?

2 good options so far are:

fly to delhi, and do the golden triangle.

fly to kerala, and do the looking at temples/sitting on beaches thing. was talking to one of our suppliers earlier and he owns a hotel on the beach and can get me a car and driver for virtually no money.

does sharjah have an airport? bet the duty free is a bit rubbish!

sri lanka looking like a very good option at 900AED return. looks small enough to be able to easily flit between beach lazing and activities.

def. be interested in hearing places to go/eat/stay.

I think the best places are a couple of rustic surf beaches but I'll check on names for you.
