Hi Claire,

Annoyingly Skype is blocked in the UAE. You will need to subscribe to a VPN service in order to use it.

you need a vpn to install it, but once set up it will work standalone. i have it on my ipod touch and keep it switched on 24/7 so as not to have to specify times when people should call me.

I've used a number of VPNs over the years, but I find this to be the most reliable/usable. Will happily stream live F1 from BBC iPlayer, and a quick switch over to Kansas City allows access to everything on hulu.com

Skype works fine here Claire, but you can't actually download it.

I have the full install file here if you need it?

Pretty much. As others have said, the Skype website is blocked so you'll need to either download the software using a VPN or get it from a CD or somewhere.

Most people seem to be able to use Skype without a VPN, once it's on their computer. But for some reason, I still need to use a VPN for it to work properly.

I use www.my-private-network.co.uk for this.

Not entirely sure Shirt. I downloaded it while in the UK with no issues. Once installed you have a globe icon on the top right of the screen, click on it and you can choose from a list of around 30 cities. Choose one and the computer switches to that specific location.

It all depends on your location.

Here on the Palm I can send Skype messages but am unable to make calls without going through the VPN.

That's rather odd as I was making video calls home most nights from Atlantis when I was staying there....
and one of my colleagues lives in Shoreline and skype to skype works from there, but not skype to mobile etc.

For VPN there is simply no better than myprivatenetwork; 5 quids per month and everything is unblocked without compromise of speed.
