Let's just say you lost your job....

It's expensive to hang around. If the company refuses to maintain residence beyond the statutory 30 day period, then the individual could look into a couple of courses of action:
- assuming one has ownership, get a visa through one's property (though the rules on this are notoriously fickle)
- create a freezone company (RAK, Fujairah, JAFZ, JLT etc) though often this requires taking office space as well
There is a third option and that is to find a mate with his own company who is willing to sponsor. This does of course create a risk on him and reduces his opportunity to employ others and may also increase his cost base (e.g. requirement to increase office space proportional to the number of staff).
Actually, Brits can simply go to the Hatta border, pay 200 dirhams to renew the visit visa for another 30 days and turn around, though this is not only a pain, but also will not allow you to perform essential tasks like renewing your car's registration etc etc.

tough one, and hopefully totally hypothetical.
i'd likely use my notice period to fire off CV's to every engineering company in the emirates and aim for anything with a liveable salary.
assuming all engineering is off limits, i'd mince over to emirates and ask for a trolley dolley job. after all i have a masters in aero. eng.
failing that, i guess it's weighing up how much i want to stay here as opposed to going home, signing on, and moving in with the parents.
i think in that situation i'd prefer to go live on in a commune in kerala or something.

I'd try to get into sports marketing/sales.
No idea how though!
Worst came to worse I'd fall back into Real Estate, I know a guy who would give me a job tomorrow.
Brilliant, why didn't I, I mean my mate think of that. Gotta be money for old rope no? Here's a villa, yeah it's lovely, sign this, give me a cheque...bingo.No idea how though!

This mate of ours.....!
Send out CV's to all Construction Recruitment Consultants worldwide. I would hang here for max 3 months, in the meantime I would sell all the cars, heck, sell everything and move into a maintained apartment (studio). If nothing after 3 months - go to South Africa and crash with the parents.
