so going next month for 10 days and wondered what sort of money needed to enjoy a meal and a few drinks, clearly hotels will be more expensive but any good local stuff i should give a go?

There's always 'local' indian, iranian, lebanese places to try in ME cities. Go for the ones that have been there for decades and you can't go far wrong.

Rarely in A.D at night so not sure of the best spots but a quick google should do you fine. Stay away from the chains; there are probably more franchisee's here than anywhere I have ever been due to the mix of nationalities.

are you coming for business? ask the indians and fillipinos where they go. you can fill to bursting for £5-10 on top notch food that way.

failing that, ask your taxi driver/concierge/receptionist where they'd go.

can't be more specific sorry, not been to AD yet!

Time Out is a good reference point. It all depends on what floats your boat.

when i'm done at ravi's, i have to be rolled home! spent 80dhs on my own last visit....

there are places in JAFZA that you'd struggle to spend more than a couple of quid. i haven't ventured into karama and deira restaurants yet [note the yet!]. also haven;t found the cheap thai place nr beach road i keep getting told about frown

think so. been told food can be hit and miss but that it's a good experience.

i suggested a 'dirt cheap amazing food places' thread before. i think we could use at least a restaurant/food sticky given the amount of times we eat out/order in.

I was there last week. it is not near the Beach Road it's just off Al Wasl just past Safa Park.

Not overly cheap either, certainly a step up from say Ravis.

It is worth a visit tho, funny little place, you used to be able to take your booze but they have stopped that

local booze, local booze, hmmm.... scratchchin

mate, it's illegal for muslims to drink, so no local tipple. i guess you could make camel mead if you wanted mind.

plenty of bars, though i can;t comment as i'm teetotal.

mm figured that would be the case but guessing varied import selection is not too big an issue.

Plenty of bars, just stay away from the Belgian Beer Cafe at the Intercon as there's something wrong with the beer there - I felt awful on Monday morning following dinner there on Sunday.

Oh, stay away from Rock Bottom before midnight, well before 11:30 anyway as that's when the bus loads of LBFMs arrive. So I'm told... And stay away from some place called the Dannam hotel, or something like that. It's busy enough around 1am but you have to pay 60aed to get in, though you do get two beers for that.

Hmmm....maybe it wasn't the beer at the BBC but the beer all over A.D that got me this week...

p.s buy some spirits at duty free on the way in so that you can avoid mini bar charges.

whilst on that topic, prepare for death at abu dhabi airport. actual, grim death. that way, when you see the mile long immigration queue with all 4 [yes, all 4!] desks open you won't feel so bad.

I never had any issues at AUH airport!

For dinner and drinks in a decent hotel restaurant you're looking at 50 quid upwards per head. Lebanese Flower is the best Lebanese food, and that is 10 to 15 per head.
