Tried posting this in GG but maybe a little to rare a problem for the general PH population wink

Does anyone know of a company that will insure my UK registered kit-car so I can drive it when I'm back in the UK? The car's registered in my name, at my parent's address in the UK (as it has been for the last 10 years). The "problem" seems to be that I now spend more than 6 months a year outside of the UK.

Tried Adrian Flux but they can only insure UK residents. I was born in the UK, hold a British passport, a UK license and have lived there since I was born but moved abroad a couple of years ago and only go back for holidays.

Seems a shame to have it sitting in the garage unloved frown

I have spoken to Lockton and Hagerty who have both said that they can provide cover for expats.

PM me if you want contact details of the people I have been dealing with.

By the way, don't bother trying to register your UK driving licence to your overseas address. As I found out, you will get it back stamped "cancelled" as apparently you can only have a UK licence if you are resident in the UK. They will provide a letter saying you are entitled to one, but no licence.

I have just come across exactly the same problem as the original poster. I'm in a similar circumstance and would like to keep my UK car insured for occasional trips back to the UK for visiting family and general pootling around.

Please do recommend insurers/brokers that I can contact to get the insurance that I would like?

I got cover through Hagerty and they have even agreed to me leaving the car in France between a trip there in June and Le Mans Classic in July with no additional premium. Have been very easy to deal with. Think they only cover classics but worth speaking to them.

Thanks. I will give them a try.

So far, I only find people who are willing to quote 2-1/2 times as much as what I previously used to pay. I find this faintly ludicrous and continue to look for a way around the problem.

Classic line were expensive, but quoted. Got a 3K limited mileage for half the price with Manning - covers me for 45 days in Europe annually so Le Mans/Le Mans Classic should be ok. biggrin

Different circumstances entirely, but Hagerty were always unbeatable when I lived in the UK.

And it was so refreshing to call their number and have the telephone answered by an actual human being (and a proper car enthusiast) in Silverstone, rather than some dreadful automated call centre menu.

Get your olds to insure it fully comp with you as a named driver?

Not sure if it would be allowed but it might be worth a shot....

Unfortunately Haggerty can't insure due to the age of the car, but have provided a lead to go from which I'll follow up. A good and professional reply to my request, so can see why they came recommended.

I am considering having family insure the car and keep it used and then dropping my name in on the insurance on return to the UK. Trouble is that I would have liked to have kept my well earned insurance NCB rolling along for my eventual return back.
