Had a really intersting chat with my mate and colleague Abdullah (local) today. I mentioned the incident with the local in pit lane and he asked why the hell didn't we call the bib. I then responded with the ex-pat vs local argument, and he was amazed. Apparently, amongst him and his friends the complete opposite is true. He even recalled a couple of instances where his friends had been involved in traffic accidents ( and been blameless) and received the dreaded red ticket. On one accasion a friend +1 were driving around when they were hit by someone who didn't stop at a red light, a fairly nasty smash by all accounts. Anyway, friend had a busted arm and leg and was a bit bloody. The other cars occupents were walking wounded. An ambulance arrived and upon hearing American accents, whisked the 2 guys to hospital, leaving the bloodied locals. During transit, the Americans demanded to be taken to the best private hospital rather than the general one normally prescribed. Cut a long story short the innocent locals were busted not only with the red ticket, but also with a claim from the private hospital for medical treatment.

I also recalled the story of our friend (Aussie female) who was stationary at the lights and was hit by a local woman. The police arrived and held a conversation in Arabic with the local lady and immediately issued our friend with the red ticket. Friend wanted to put her side of the story and after 2 words was told to be quiet by the bib, he wasn't interested. My mate said the same had happened to him, and he refused to accept the ticket and suggested they all went to the station to sort out the details. It was only then when all the details were recorded and documents logged that he was presented wit hthe green ticket and sent on his way.

Going back to our Aussie mate's story, Abdullah suggested that the local woman was not insured and that rather than any individual suffering severe finacial loss, it's easier for all to let the insurance company bear the costs, hence the red ticket to our mate.

Sorry for the rabmling, but it makes you think....perhaps it's not all so one sided? What d'ya think?

Ah, apologies. The bib turn up with 2 books. Red means that you're to blame and you and associated insurance company will cover all costs.
Green mean you're totally innocent and you need to be paid/repaired.

Ahh I see. Do the Police attend all accidents then, even car park scrapes? Or if someone admits guilt do they not need to?

what are the chances of that scenario playing out if it was an uninsured expat at fault? slim to none i'd expect.

as for the pit rage, why would you bother the polis over a bit of charged foreplay wink

it's really not worth it.

i knocked a local out when i was 14, 3 of them trying to run us over with quads in the desert, 2 of us on foot.

spent 2 hours in bur dubai police station with my parents, horrible experience, the lad that i hit who was the main protagonist was sat opposite with the police, he never had to explain why he was charging at us on a 500cc motorbike.

that is why i didn't bite last night, say i call BIB, they take my address and visit, me and the missus aren't married, when asked to explain my living arrangements, i/we would be fked.

I have one get out of jail free card via the sharjah royalty, i don't intend of cashing it in at the kartdrome!

they are all for sale though, one of my girlfriends mates binned her car in the marina 3 weeks ago, off her head, woke up in hospital handcuffed to the bed, 40k aed later it all went away, including the accident report. therefore she had to fund the car repair as well.

at least it is openly corrupt here, if you have 'wasta' you are safe

If you have an accident, no matter how minor, the police must be called.
They then make a decision on whether to attend (if it's a minor scrape where the party at fault has admitted liability then they won't come) if they do attend then both parties must wait at the scene until they arrive. (until very recently you weren't even allowed to move the cars, no matter where they were)

If they don't attend, then both parties must report together to a nominated police station within 72hrs where the relevent paperwork is done and green / pink tickets are handed out.

It's a relatively simple system and I had my green ticket within 30 miutes of getting to the police station.

That said, I was hit by a British ex-pat who immediately admitted liability.... I'm still not sure I'd want to test the system if the third party was a connected local!
