just had a call from the shipping company re: my stuff coming in from the UK. i have to go down to JAFZA customs this afternoon with one of their guys or else customs will call CID yikes

she asked if i had anything of an adult nature in there, any micro cd's, any knives, and any pistols. christ knows what they've found!

i have a full set of chef's knives and a few hundred dvd's. no porn whatsoever, definitely no firearms and i have no idea what a micro cd is.

what's the score, am i getting busted or is this just the standard pedantry at work?

ETA - just in case i haven't been as scrutinous as i thought and there is a bongo flick, i guess denying everything is the way to go. of course if it's an M6 carbine this might not work.

I assume there is no hard drives, only DVD's?

Therefore the above deletion comment is nothing to worry about

The fact that they have mentioned CID would make me brick it as well, but maybe that's a scare tactic to make sure you turn up?

If there is anything they don't like I would feign ignorance and ask them to destroy it (keep for their own personal use) on the spot.

Do you have an Arabic speaker in the office you can take? An Emirati would be even better.

You mean they search the hard disks? Hmm, could be tricky.

yes, it is the CID aspect that is making me twitch, but as you say that may just be so i turn up. customs have their own powers after all. i imagine if it was serious they'd have gone straight to CID anyway. hopefully it'll just be an hour or so of my time and nothing more.

i have a macbook in there i bought for spares. there might be some SD cards as well from old phones/cameras, but that's it.

like i say, i have knives, several hundred dvds and several hundred cd's. it might be they have found 'something' and think there's more. there could well be banned images on the SD/HDD, i really have no idea. i have absolutely no clue what they've found that resembles a pistol!

i assume the manager from the removal company will speak arabic [they specifically said manager and that he'd come pick me up as i'm in JA anyway]. they can confiscate what they like tbh, don't need to be made to feel like this given i've just passed my probation!

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about Shirt or CID would be knocking on your door by now.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, probably just the knives and they're making sure you're not bringing them in as weapons.
Someone Mrs C knows of had an adult toy in her belongings, and that was let through fine! Are you sure you haven't left any king-size rizla's or 20 cases of beers in there??!!

As said above, if there's a local in the office that can go with you it might help....or not, depending on what's in there! Get thinking man! If it was serious, they wouldn't have called you in and you'd be greased up already.

Hope all is OK? We had a close run thing with local customs when importing our stuff...a tale for outside this forum though!

I suspect it will be because of the DVDs rather than anything else. If you run into any problems let me know, one my mates is a big wig with one of the major logistics firms out here and would a useful contact if any advice is needed.

you're both right of course, if it was serious then i'd be in the cells given that customs, the police station, and my office must be within a few hundred yards of each other. still doesn't stop me feeling tense, not having a good day at all!

i bought all new boxes and was enormously careful [given my old vices] to check every single item that went in there. i've got a few borderline dvd's but they're all mainstream cinema releases, a couple of biographies they may not like and an agent provocateur poker set. about a dozen razor sharp knives, plus whatever may be on the knackered mac.

it surprises me that they'd be so vigorous as to check hard drives/memory cards given the volume throughput at the docks.

also the removals guys went through every box in the UK and pulled out things they knew would get noticed.[aerosols and foodstuffs].

hopefully, this is all just a clever ruse to confiscate my yorkshire teabags...

That would be my guess as well, doesn't need to be pr0n to ring an alarm bell.

Do you have a copy of the packing list? it might just be a "phrase" you used. When we moved from to Dubai we were advised to be very general in our description of some decorative items.

Just remember, if a bar a soap is on the floor, leave it there.....
