Hi guys

I've seen a nice little Clio 182 on Dubizzle. Good condition, 2006, FSH, 106K and asking price of AED 28,000.

I like the look of it but am having a dilemma. I've been looking at a few BMW 330s for around the same money albeit with a higher mileage and older model year. The BMW seems to be a decent cruiser and the auto makes it easy around town but it's not very exciting. On the other hand, the Clio will be fun but it's not ideal (manual box) for the daily grind through Dubai traffic.

Let's hear your thoughts. Any experience of living with a manual in Dubai?

I fear I'm too old for a manual these days...Those flappy padel things are about as much effort I can muster.

Would you be visiting the Autodrome at all, I guess the Clio would be a hoon around there.

Not sure about the Autodrome... very minimal use if any.

I have to admit that after a few years of auto (DSG) I'm a little apprehensive about the prospect of having to change gears myself. But will the fun factor outweigh the annoyance factor when stuck in traffic jams? I'm not sure.

if it's the car i'm thinking of [silver, abu dhabi renault dealer maintained, bone stock, full history] then it sold a few weeks ago. was advertised on the various local forums [evolve.ae, dubaipetrolheads.com] and went for 24k iirc.

everyone at work thinks i'm a lunatic for wanting a manual but i don't see how it's any different than back home. my commute is marina-ish to jebel ali though and i leave at 7 so traffic is light. ok so even 20yr old tiptronic wasn't as bad as i thought, but my left foot feels redundant and manual appeals to the engineer/petrolhead in me.

if you can't cope with a clio's clutch than hand your bks in at the door. another thing is that with a big v8 you could just keep it in 3rd through traffic and let the torque do it's thing.

eta - fun factor will be dictated by how much you get to the autodrome or out of town. if there's a decent driving road in dubai, please let me know. as a commuter, i think even 2litres is lacking out here. it's all about how quick your 100-120time is wink

Yeh, it's the car in Abu Dhabi but the advert was placed yesterday so I'd be surprised if it was sold already... maybe it's a different car. Or it has been re-listed in error.

yup, exact same car.

ask why it's back up, but advantage to you is that you know he'll go to 25k without even being pushed.

Strange. I wonder what happened with the sale.

Renault = unreliability here. Sorry to say this, but a lot of the guys who bought the 182's and the next model up have had the car in the Stealership more than on the road. Build quality is stE as well.

Nothing wrong with a m/t in Dubai. My DD is a 08 CR8 m/t, weekend fun and partime DD is a 97 M3 m/t. I also used to have a 97 Scooby GC8 m/t with a paddle clutch (based on single plate) - never had an issue with driving in traffic. Had it been in 04-07, then yes, traffic was a biatch back then, but its not so bad now.

So I emailed the guy about the car (no phone number given) and got this, slightly strange, response.

"Yes, I do have it. Given how much I love the car, I would like to hang onto it until August. I was in no rush to sell it and thought it would take longer to find a buyer for a French car here but apparently it seems to be an attractive deal. Hence I have just taken off the link.

Never thought I should say this, but it is significantly more fun than a Porsche, mostly when you add the shocked look on anyone’s face while being outrun buy the little thing.

Should we get back to this question in late July, early August, or would you need the car immediately?

Regards"

Hey Yorky, never had a single problem with my 182 and did 110k in it.

Hmmm...I'd tell hm to poke it and say that you'll look for something else.

There are a few guys on Evolve.ae forum who curse their Clios with a passion, but love the driveability and handling (when its running)

Renault in reliability perception shocker! I'd love a little manual for sts and giggles but there are so few decent corners here that I think you'd get bored pretty quickly.

The best corner I've found that is not an on/off ramp is the S bend on the Ranches perimeter road!

This is my main concern about going down the Clio route. I have no doubt that it's a fun little car but if I'm honest with myself, 99% of my driving is Shk Zayed road and similar.

There's another one on Dubizzle for AED 22,000 but it looks a little ropey with a terrible stripe on the bonnet and a red Renault badge on the grille. A few scrapes on the bumpers indicate that it's not been looked after.

Anyway, I'm having a BMW 330i inspected at A2B tomorrow night so we'll see what happens there. If all goes well, I'll be cruising to work in that by the end of the week.

I've still got the R32 but have given it to my wife for the time being. She's just completed 1 year of driving (got her license in the UAE) so I can put her on the insurance for a reasonable sum.

She's had to drive the Yaris for the last year so it's only fair that she gets a stint in the R32. I'm not prepared to drive the Yaris on a ongoing basis, hence the car search. Fingers crossed this BMW is good shape mechanically.
