Does anybody care about the cards? I have never been asked to show mine and I have renewed my maids visa, sponsored my wifes parents visit and renewed my wifes car registration all in the last 5 months.
At the end of the day it is a local employement scheme.
Apparently you need them to set up a new DEWA account. At the end of the day it is a local employement scheme.
I can imagine that sometime in the future you will need one to register the car as well.
Not long after I received mine (over a year ago now) I tried to use it at the Airport - not valid here Sir! Mmmmmmmmmm, a month or so later, went to hire a car "ID please Sir", handed over my ID card, "Sorry Sir, not valid, we need your passport!" I was like WTF, for the ID card, they have taken photo's of me, got prints of nearly every single part of my body, have all my Visa info and its no fecking good!!!!!!!!!
Right from day 1 I have said that this is just a money making scheme by the Gov, and now they have a cheek to reduce the period of validity of it from 3 years to 2 years (of course, not for Emirati's though)

Also, when you go to renew your residency Visa, they'll be pulling your pants down...
Yes, I hear that they are trying to synchronise visa and ID card renewals so that you'll get both items done in the one process. Supposedly.I'd been putting mine off for ages and finally got around to applying a few months ago. The typing took a few days, the appointment for the fingerprints took a few months and I'm still waiting for the actual card.
Having said all that, the individual appointments for each stage were a breeze. I was in and out in fifteen minutes each time.

Thats the plan, a few of the guys at work have renewed theirs or got new ones this month and that is how its worked for most of them.dxbtiger said:

No, this is the official ID card for the UAE, which isn't accepted anywhere as official ID...I applied for the family late last year and got an "interview" in March. The cards have only just arrived, just as the whole family's visas are about to be cancelled. We exit, come back in August under my new company, and get the whole fricking thing done again.
Still, if it keeps them off the streets....
My office admin assistant went to open a bank account and they didn't accept the Emirates ID card. The ID offices also used to open on a Saturday, this made life much easier. Guess what, I have been told that now they are not open on a Saturday so you either have to round the family up during the day (time off work or school), or try and do it after work (after collecting the family etc).
Never bothered getting the maid a Emirates ID card as she won't be buying or registering a car......
Family and I need to renew our visa's in September, lets see what happens then.

No, this is the official ID card for the UAE, which isn't accepted anywhere as official ID...The expiry date of your ID card will from now on be matched to the expiry date of your visa and you will require your ID card to be valid when you start your visa renewal process. However, you won't be able to renew an ID card unless the visa is valid (Catch 22 if you let one of them expire!).
New arrivals in the UAE will not be able to get a driving licence unless they have an ID card (or at least the receipt for the ID card application) - this has been the case for at least 14 months now.
we sorted out my wife's ID the other day at the EIDA office in Al Ain. Piece of cake - in and out in 20 minutes then a 3-4 week wait for it to be delivered to the post office for collection.
