I think I set some kind of record today..... picked up a hire car in JBR, drove to Mall of the Emirates.... in the queue for valet behind a Landcruiser VXR.... reverse lights come on,

has he seen me?

surely he's seen me, he's got a reversing camera and all sorts....

crunch.

guess not then.

12 minutes after setting off, on the phone to the hire company to arrange a new car.

ah well, didn't like the Lancer much anyway lol

Called the police and they didn't want to attend... apparently we have to go to Bur Dubai police station within 72hrs, so we're off tomorrow morning.

Third party admitted liability straight away, there were also witnesses and he confirmed to the police that it was his fault.
Apparently he'll get a red piece of paper and I'll get a green one and my hire car company will do the rest.

Got into work this morning to discover it must have been a full moon or something, 2 other people were involved in accidents whilst in taxis over the weekend!

Green slip is now in my posession.... a very painless process that took 20 minutes from beginning to end.

It appears if you're going to be hit by someone here, an honest Brit is top of the list!

Indeed.

I got hit by an Indian coach driver, admitted liability to me straight away, but as soon as Police arrived he changed his tune.

wkers.

Although luckily the Policeman trusted me - racism is handy sometimes.

i can't match 12mins, but i broke my duck inside 24hrs!

parked up outside the hotel, nose inward between 2 huge SUV's. when i came to leave there was nothing behind, and even though i checked the mirrors before setting off i had a slight nudge with a taxi.

impact speed was that of an underpowered auto reversing with no throttle applied. no damage to the mighty honda and about 50dhs damage to the taxi [3-4cm slight crease behind the rear arch].

gave him my number and he rang later to say the taxi firm wanted to make a claim. spent an hr waiting for the police to turn up at the hotel with all the other taxi drivers slating this guy for bothering. the police also did the same when they turned up,

i have full CDW so don't care, but hertz said they need the police report for any accidents regardless of damage. the other guy got a green a4 sheet with all the details, i've got a white a5 slip in arabic. on the back in english it says traffic violation and info. how to pay a fine.

so, what do i do now? current plan is do nothing until i hand the car back in 4 weeks time.

oh, and do i have to pay a fine or is a generic form i've been given?

It happens, and I'll take a crawling pace nudge over a SZR smash! in amy case, ater fixing the concierge's car and now this I am getting on well with the FOH staff.

As I say, don't care as its insured. More the red tape I can't be doing with, hence the plan to wait until I hand it back before telling them.

Fairly sure Hertz will just bill you once you have given the car back, plus their 'admin fee', I'd leave it with them, being proactive and paying it will just be a PITA

Would have expected the slip to be red though.

so did i, though didn't question it as a white 'red' slip is very dubai if you ask me!

taxi driver told me it was the red slip, i just want to know why it says the info about the fine. the police said hardly anything to me after i confirmed what had happened and that i hadn't had a drink. they seemed pretty put out given the damage caused.

i'll ask the guys on the concierge desk to read it for me.

so it appears i've been fined 200AED for 'reversing dangerously'.

its says i can appeal. i don't think autobox crawling pace is exactly dangerous. please advise on red tape / appeals vs just paying. this'd get right up my nose in the UK and smells like expat tax to me, but then tis only 4 beers.

PS - is counting the value of things in beers bad?

Not worth the hassle - you reversed in to somebody, I very much doubt you would win your case in court.

Cough it up and put it down to "experience"

Interesting that Phil did exactly the same thing as the guy who hit me and was fined.

When we called the police to attend my accident they weren't interested in the slightest and the guy who reversed into me wasn't fined at all.....

i'd have to go to court to contest? fk that. only narked that i didn't get chance to explain anything and wasn't told i was signing to accept a fine. taxi driver can fk off as well for telling me that was my green slip, gave the cheeky git half my takeaway as we waited.

tbh, i reckon AED200 is more than the taxi repair bill hehe

I would also be very wary - the taxi driver could have done this on purpose thinking that you had been drinking and once the cops came, got a wiff of your beer soaked breath, would have whipped you off to jail.

As a side note: nobody will ever stop to let you reverse out of a parking space (unless they want your spot). They will "honk you/flash lights" and fly past you - they will NOT stop.

I will never drink and drive here, not worth the risk. There was 6hrs between the bump and calling the police so I doubt he was trying anything. I'm more of the opinion that the taxi firm want to inflate the repair cost, hence the pics.
