chaps,

just wondering if any of you know of a map [hard copy or web based] which shows the names of the apartment blocks in JBR and the marina? i have narrowed down where i want to live and need to weed out the good from bad on dubizzle.

ps - if you know of anyone looking for flatmates, details would be appreciated!

not really. i want to live on the beach side of the marina but pref. with a view of that instead of the sea. they'll then be rated for how close they are to shops/bars etc.

i used to live in mcr city centre and after a few months i couldn;t be arsed walking 5 minutes to tesco as it was 'too far' so had my shopping delivered. i know that i'm lazy and that won't be changing in this heat!

i'm also told a trident or emaar build are the better ones but i haven't been inside any yet. it'd be nice to have something as an aide memoir as i'm going to be flatsharing so i'll need to look at a fair few before i find a flat full of latin lovelies who lay awake all night dreaming of overweight yorkshiremen wink

Emaar and Trident generally are the best yes, priced accordingly.

Keep your eyes open for Marina Promenade, great spot, views over the Yacht Club.

Marina Quays and Park Island the other 2 Emaar developments that will give you beach side but Marina view.

Check out a website called skyscraper city for stuff like that, I got one off there when I first got here.

I'm on skyscrapercity, legacy from my old agency days, had a quick look earlier but couldn't find an up to date version, will try again tomorrow when I have more time.

Shirt, any particular reason you are flatsharing?

i've found a couple of maps via skyscraper city. looks reasonably complete to me but then what'd i know! cheers for the pointer hitch. the ones dxb mentions above look really nice.

sharing for a couple of reasons really. lived on my own for 4yrs in the uk and got a bit bored of my own company. the move here to dubai is such a life changer in many ways and i want to include a social step change in with that. not signing a lease means i can be more flexible where i live and what i pay, and i guess i just want to meet people and have someone to chat st to after work.

also seems to be plenty of choice at 3-4k/mth which is 40-50% of my allowance. the balance can go to better use elsewhere driving

Fair enough, month by month gives you the freedom to walk I guess as and when you don't want to share.

Will have a browse on dubizzle see if anything stands out.

Avoid DEC tower, Manchester tower and Marina Diamond. st.

Did I read somewhere else that you are a yorkshire lad? Parents live in LS22

that's it. if flatmates turn out to be dicks, or french, or worse! i can look elsewhere and/or find a 1bed when i'm ready to. if you wouldn't mind looking that'd be great, although most ads don't mention a building. hoping to fill friday with viewings and compiling a shortlist in my favourites folder. there's a few people at work needing flatmates but want to avoid that if at all possible. looked at one place so far - ad pics didn't show the lovely view of the dewa plant...

ls20 is wetherby/harrogate way iirc? very nice part of the 'shire that. i'm from a place called allerton bywater, wf10. lived in hull for 4yrs though so i sound like i have an IQ of 40 biggrin

Collingham to be precise, slap bang in the middle of the 'Golden triangle', it is a lovely part of the world, will be there in 10 days for a wedding and a 30th.

My gut is that JBR will be the easiest place to find a one bed flat share, plus side JBR apartments are quite big comparatively, loads of parking and the walk is on your doorstep. It does look a little tired imo (I'm typing this from Murjan, leaving next month) but a good intro to Dubai living.

hoping to get a few days there myself, going to glasgow for some training in the next 2 weeks. a few jars in my old local will be welcome and i really really hope it rains! hehe

my mate has a place in amwaj. nothing special those flats but they cheap and spacious. tbh how i feel about the other tenants will be more important than the decor.

Oi, I used to live in Manchester Tower!!!
It wasn't through choice as it was the only place we could get for a 3 month period. But, I agree, it's the worst building I have been in in Dubai. The apartment itself was lovely, and it had goos views, but the building is old, the lifts smelly and noice travels easily.
Tridaent are the nicest towers IMO.

But the Gulf News as there are loads of house/apartment shares advertised in the classifieds section.

I spent a whole day last summer on a mate's pushbike cycling around the marina looking at apartments. It's surprising how often the security guard will just let you in to a few vacant apartments to get a feel for each building. As you (and other's have said), it's often more about the overall development rather than the individual apartment. If you've been in one apartment you've practically been in 'em all, but they vary a lot in terms of finish, views and overall amenities. I quickly narrowed it down to Emaar.

This is where I ended up. It was a bit more expensive than all the others but I loved it as soon as I saw it.

That's exactly where I am. All the advantages that you list, including an Al Maya supermarket on the ground floor and a choice of Starbucks or Costa on the marina level. The main drawback for me is the ongoing construction on that road between the marina and JBR. It looks a mess and it makes a bad traffic situation even worse. The good news is that Marina Promenade is directly opposite the pedestrian crossing that gets you across this eyesore to JBR Walk and the beach.

Where do you work? I work in Jumeira so it's bit of a hassle getting to and from the 'wrong' end of the marina during peak traffic hours. A better bet would be Marina Tower (near Grosvenor House) or the original six for access to Dubai. If you're in the 'new' part of town or Abu Dhabi, my end of the marina would be perfect.

PM me if you want to have a look around. smile

tks for the maps dxb, i'd not seen the JBR one before and [park aside!] it's a good one to have.

geoff: i work in JAFZA but can trade an extra 5mins in the car on a morning against an easier shuffle to the shops. i am trying to line up viewings for fri/sat so i'd very much appreciate a look at your building if that's ok?
