Hi guys

I picked up a new (to me) 90 at the weekend, nicely kitted out and ready for me to get back in to off roading. The car has 20/something/16 Kingpin Mud Tyres on it. They are in decent condition with plenty of tread left.I have yet had chance to get out and do some playing, so unsure how they will perform.

Anyone any opinions on them or have any experience or knowledge of them?

Also, on a non lifted 90, what is the largest tyre I can fit on in term sof width and profile? When I got the 90, I was told it has "weller" wheels on itm which can take wider tyres as standard. Any more info on this wheel type would also be very helpful.

Bear with me oh knowledgable ones, i'm still learning. biggrin

Excellent tyres, just remember to straddle any ruts you find. I used them on my Bowler for ages until I could afford something larger in diameter...

Tyres are highly subjective. In truth I suspect most MT's are pretty good. But ground conditions/type and driving style can massively affect their ability.

As for the largest size. This is even more subjective.......... tongue out

A common size to run is 235/85R16. These will fit standard LR rims fine. It's a tallish tyre at 32" but not too wide, so retains good steering lock.

A Chunkier looking tyre would be a 31.10.50R15, 15" rims are needed (LR are mostly 16"). This is about a 265 width and is slightly shorter than the 235's.

Both of these will fit straight on no probs.

As for rims, well some wide tyres will say you need a 10" wide rim (LR are usually 7 or 8"). But you can actually get most wider tyres to fit on LR rims if you want and many do.

Do you plan to compete at all?? ALRC regs limit rim offsets, so bear this in mind if you go after market.

In the UK there is a good selection of 16" tyres as that is what LR's run stock, but most Jeeps run 15" rims, so there are some other interesting sizes in 15" too. No real advantage either way though.

As for max sizes, well this is my brothers old V8 90 (now my Uncles). In this pic it has my 33.11.50R15 Simex Jungle Trekker II's fitted. There are about a 290/90R15

They are on 15x10 8 spokes.

They are fine on the road, but do rub the flares off road. The 90 has a 1" lift. If you trimmed the arches (plastic flares) a little they'd be fine.

The same vehicle on some BFG A/T's 31.10.50R15:

N.B. If you are looking at lifts, don't rush in. A lift is good, but not if you lose upwards wheel travel or droop.

Be warned though, big wheels will likely break stuff. LR's are not know for strong axles and diffs. So if you really want to go bigger then budget for repairs or upgrades (Have a look as Ashcroft Transmission and scare yourself silly... eek top quality parts, but pricey).

Standard 90 with some 7.50's on (very similar size to the 235's, although some 7.50's are smaller, seems to depend on make):

235/85R16's:

This is the same V8 90, here's its running some 225/xx/16's, can't recall the profile, but it's something like 65 I think.

These look wide'ish but being not so tall makes them look chunkier and makes the vehicle look more lifted. I personally quite like the look and they seemed to work quite well off road.

I find myself agreeing with 300bhp! biggrin

I've tried pretty much every size and the best compromise seems to be 235/85/16 on a 90. Wider often meens less grip on slippy surfaces unless you need flotation too, so what looks wide and cool often gets stuck more.

With the demise of cross-ply tyres (yippee!) 235/85/16 about the best sort of size for a short LR - heavier needs wider really to maintain a suitable ground pressure, too little ground pressure will cause problems on greasy surfaces though.

Biggest problem with small diameter tyres is the under-axle clearance which was why I went to 235/85 R 16.
