I need a 4x4 for camping, hill walking, space for dogs, etc. I've been offered a 1998, 3.1 Diesel, manual, very clean, tidy and amazingly looked after for the age, it's been serviced every 6k too, about 120k on clock I think.

Are these any good? Should think it'll suit my needs down to the ground but just looking for any further advice/views.

Cheers!

Be careful...I have known 3 of these, family and friends have owned all suffering blown engines from failed oil pumps. Its a common problem. One with less than 10k on clock.

I thought it was the newer 3.0 that had issues, and the older 3.1 was bombproof

I have one (2000 SWB on a 'Y') with 120k on the clock - Pretty much bombproof - Only thing to note is the glow-plug needs about 3 goes when the weather's really cold. That aside, it's a blast (I only bought it for the Winter so is now on the market)

No 3.1. Last one was my brother in law told him my concerns. 6 months later that went bang as well . Pump failure.

Well I bought the 3.1, it's a UK supplied Citation, 128k, full Mot and 6 Months tax. It's a Dec 97 one so almost a 1998.
I have to say it's absolutely mint, the cleanest R plate I've ever seen! It came with a folder full of history/receipts, it's been serviced every 5000 miles and has wanted for nothing. The interior is like a new car with no marks, tears or anything. Never had any dogs in it or used as a tip car, the seats, etc are perfect condition, non smokers too! Everything works as it should, including the heated seats and the air con. Alloys are mint and it's had 5 new tyres only 1000 miles back.
I was very impressed with the drive back to N. Wales, drove it from outside Southampton, about 250 miles, no knocks or anything. Plenty of power and torque, a very smooth drive.

Very happy indeed with my purchase, off to France on a family camping trip this July.

We ran one for work for years - much better than the navara that replaced it. Its still going strong too - we know the lad who bought it!
