My Dad has one and I've driven quite a bit.

Nice to drive, comfy, great for wafting. Auto is okay, a bit sluggish to change down but then it's not exactly a coupe is it! Well specced. Great stereo system (Rockford Fosgate). Reversing cameras/sensors etc etc.

Can be a bit crashy over really bad roads (which we have here at the moment). Great off-road with the right tyres on it, not with the 20 inch wheels and tyres the one in your link comes with.

He gets about 26-28mpg on normal driving.

If it's the latest latest model (they upgraded the engine in 2010) then it has the lowest emisions in its class so road tax isn't too bad.

Dad's on his 3 of the new shape and 5th Shogun overall and has never been let down by them. If the company car tax didn't kill it then I would have one in a shot.

Thanks Sixpack, very helpful, I wondered about the wheels/tyres off road - it would only be off road about 5% of the time (in fields, nothing heavy) so not too worried about that, those 20" alloys are stunning looking on the car. One of the main things that puts me off is the privacy glass - never liked it on any car

Keep searching, it was an option on the Elegance. Dad hasn't got it on his.

What sort of driving are you going to be doing in it ?
95% road, 5% off road but not proper off road, just fields / untarred lanes local to where I live

I've a 2001 3.2 diesel, so essentially the same thing bar some tweaking. It's really rather nice. Far nicer on-road than my old 4.6 RangeRover and still hugely capable off-road. Locking centre and rear diffs are fantastic, my only bugbear is that you can't have low range without the centre diff locked. Mine spends lots of time offroad and its only real achilles heel is lack of axle articulation (the rear overhang doesn't help but it's no worse than a discovery).

The tiptronic gearbox is great (mine massively improved by a fluid change today).

There's not really much to look for on these, certainly when buying that new. Look for slack in the rear diff that would indicate it's been used to tow in RWD (like mine was). They'd fixed the rear diff oil seal problems well before 2009 so you're OK on that front.

Make sure the front footwells are dry, pop the sill trims off and feel underneath the carpet (the carpets are thick waterproof plastic) as they're fond of leaking from a variety of places. The leaks are all easily fixed but a wet carpet is a 4 month long nightmare (guess how I know this).
I've read that the rear door stop is weak on these, and Mitsu are quibbling over warranty when it rips out of the bodywork. Worth either looking into or being careful of.

If you can, get a 2010 model. They've more power and less emissions, towing weight is up to 3500 from 3300 too.

If you're after more info the Australian Pajero forum is the one to look at.

Having just extolled the virtues of locking centre and rear diffs, I don't think they had locking rears much after 2003.

If you do buy one, replace the top cam chain guide at 70,000 miles or so. It's £10 and takes an hour to fit but if it fails it takes your engine with it. Inexplicably it's not part of the service schedule.
