OK, my low range keeps popping out (manual box) on my classic Range Rover.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

(Took Bob out today - he is seriously impressive. Amazing bit of kit. But was shocked at the thoughtlessness of a certain South coast club - blocking two lanes for over half an hour, just standing around, rather than getting one clear for everyone else. Looked like a carpark...)

I don't know if it's the same (I've got a Disco II), but if it is, you need to get under and lubricate the movement of the Hi-Low lever. My Disco had never seen mud until I bought it, and the lever was very stiff. It didn't travel far enough to fully engage, and was regularly slipping out of gear (in both hi and low). A good dose of grease sorted it, and the lever travels just a bit further in each direction - and locks properly in place.

This could well be it. When Low range is selected, a portion of the selector shaft which sits outside the transfer box has to move inside, and its this external part that gets all corroded and prevents correct selction.

I had an early D1 & rather than the linkage seizing I had a broken clip. I think RRs are much the same. I had a squared off 'C' shape clip connecting each end of the linkage & one end have cracked so it bent rather than moving the selector on the Tbox.

Early 4 speed manual ones are very prone to this and it's usually to do with the selector in the top of the transfer box. An easy cure is to use a bungy cord. When we raced one this was essential as the shock loads would throw it into neutral even with a good box.
