At this money I suspect the disco route would be a far better option. Sold me tricked up 200TDi last week for just over a grand.

Yes you can.

Last summer I bought an ex-MOD 110 hardtop, 2.5 petrol with 2 months MOT and 6 months tax for <£1k. Chassis and bulkhead OK but failed MOT on brakes, exhaust, leaky fuel tank and a few other bits'n'bobs.

Sold it for what I paid when my current 110 cropped up on ebay and I couldn't resist a v8...

He wants to pull his boat. The 2.5 petrol can barely pull itself in 110 guise. biggrin

hehe I know, it was a gutless bd of a thing.

A tdi for boat-pulling you'll be needing. Good luck finding that for a grand! Vaguely decent Tdi's usually start at around £2k...

Here's one:

OK, not a Defender but a Ninety... and only the 2.5 NAD, ripe for a tdi conversion!

Unless you're really after a project and are keen to practise welding, I think I'd be looking at stuff like Shoguns and Terranos for that kind of money. A friend at work acquired a diesel Terrano for around £6-700 and it was actually not too bad at all.

I know of a genuine 90 V8 station wagon for a grand, would need a chassis but otherwise nice and straight.

Well OP did ask for a project!

To be honest, I agree with the guy above, if looking for a very cheap workhorse there are plenty of options that will be better in every way than a land rover. I know a guy that bought a ford maverick, bit tatty but mechanically good for way less than a grand. It's more comfortable, quieter, faster, more economical, more spacious and far less rusty than a £1000 Land Rover!

Check ebay in the spring when 4x4 demand is down, I've seen loads of Jeep Cherokees, Shoguns, Mussos, Fourtraks etc etc all in the £1k region that aren't FUBAR.

Yes I'd tend to agree, fourtraks/shoguns are looking favorable. The issue isn't the weight, the signum can cope with that bit, its the slipway when I get there. Paying a 15yr old kid to use his dads landcruiser to pull you out ain't funny rolleyes

No rush anyway, boat is not used until April so ill keep a look out and stike when one jumps out.

Thanks guys for you help

You will never get a usable Defender for <£1k unless it's a scam or stolen rolleyes

If you definitely want to stay with Land Rover then a MK1 Disco of '93/94 vintage in 200tdi flavour is where you should be looking wink
