Anyone out there finding this an influence on their current 4x4 useage or indeed what there next vehicle is going to be ?
Before christmas I had been considering either a petrol or diesel cherokee, but Im decided on diesel now.

Ive worked out a way to reduce my fuel costs for travelling to work. Soon as the spring gets here Im going to ride that shinny new bicycle I bought at least once a week and save 20 % fuel costs !!biggrin

We have a petrol Cherokee 3.7L and love it. It is a bit thirsty though, but well equipped and capable. An LPG conversion is on the mind, with lower VED and fuel at 66-70p/Litre, it would pay for itself in around 2 years, as well as adding some value to the car for the future. Jeeps are supposed to handle LPG well enough, so I would not write off a petrol over a diesel.

Same here I drive a 2.8td Delica and it's very thirsty, where I live there is an underpass under the A19 that cuts my 6 mile journey to work almost in half, so it's just as quick to ride my bike, I told myself 3 times a week and stuck to it till this week my front crank stopped changing gear so I'm stuck with 6 gears and some nasty hills. I'm going to pull it apart at the weekend and see what's up with it. Bikes are a hell of a lot easier to fix aswell!!!

My Series is just a play thing really and as such only covers a maximum of 30 miles a week (If I use it a lot!), so fuel isn't really a concern on that one. My 5l V8 everyday car is a different story, though!!!!!!!

With the Tdi the series is easily doing 30+mpg so much happier about that compared to the 20 on petrol. Putting range rover diffs in next week which will push up to 40ish. Who says old landrovers are thirsty!!

Really? I find that quite tricky to believe.

Guess there is a big difference between your weekend "fun" car and a car you "need" to use everyday (work, school runs etc)

After the mortgage, our food and fuel bills via for second place in the family monthly spend frown

Yes really!! Tdi is a very effciant engine manual discos can get up to mid 30's with no problems and a SWB series is a lot less weight wise to carry around. Just dont go flat out and it sips fuel

Having owned two Tdi Discos in my experience anything beyond 30mpg is somewhere between highly optimistic and dreaming......

I find myself using my 3.0 V6 Auto LWB Shogun more because of fuel prices. It's less thirsty than the V8! hehe

200tdi defender 90, with a tweaked fuel pump and alisport intercooler combined with a heavy right foot, massive old heavy roof rack and MTs I get 25mpg at the moment.

When I had no roof rack and detuned it I was getting 29mpg so I can easily believe 30+ if you get the weight down and run road tyres.

I am mixing veg oil when I get a good deal on it as it helps keep the cost down a bit.

The daily car is a 328 E46 which is averaging 30mpg on my commute and can provide track fun on occasion!

Ive got the same vehicle/engine as you. How do you find it runs on veg oil and are you having to change the fuel filter more often?

I have found that in that freezing week before Xmas she was a little sluggish to start, it was not a problem but certainly I noticed a difference.

Apart from that she runs fine on it, when the engine is up to temp on a 30% mix she feels smoother but a little bit slower.

I have not yet changed the filter - it is on my todo list along with a full service to see if there is any difference.

I would urge caution, I made a mistake and ran 100% when the engine was hot. Ran fine however I then topped up with Derv after realizing what I had done but did not drive far enough to purge the lines and engine of pure veg!!! Since it was cold she would not start and i had to use a blow torch to heat it all up!!

The price of veg is going up to hence why I have not bothered installing an extra tank and heat exchange set up.

Thanks for the info Andy, I havent looked into it myself as to be honest I dont do that many miles in it ~8k miles.

I knew running veg in the cold weather wasnt to be advised but thought I might give it a try in the summer if I can find veg oil cheap enough.
