Golf Mk2 16v Gti trials car - not the best choice!

Long distance reliability trials were sold to me as a type of uphill rallying. I really liked the bits Fifth Gear have done about these so I thought I would have a crack in my old Mk2 valver.
I sort of began to accept that my old Mk2 was not going to be on a stand at any VW show in my lifetime. So I thought I would give the VX220 and track days a miss for a bit and try something semi-competitive.
